terrible in comparison with Y 2010.
Apr 2016 • Friends
This was a terrible edition of the Ghent flower show. It was to foreseen that with the belgian weather (esp. in this season), it would be raining. Furthermore the locations were too far from another.
Next time (I hope there will be a next time due to the high losses because of the edition 2016) stay in the Flanders Expo halls. At least it is dry and one 1 location.
All by all this edition was a very bad publicity for Ghent.

A must to do because you can combinate the visit of the old city decorated with flowers
May 2016 • Solo
You can visit the floralien in the morning, have somewhere a nice meal and relax, and than go back in the late afternoon or evening.
But the exhibition is only every 5 years orgenised!

I went since the 70 thies and each time it was beautyfull .This year they change the formula but it wasn't as nice as before .There ware some nice things ( some artists did it over and over again) but a lot of things were disappointing (use of no real flowers, some plants were not flowering at all etc)It 's a pity and i a very sad .

Evening visit
Apr 2016 • Friends
We visited this festival at night at a lower price. the only location we could not visit was SMAK because that closes at 6PM. The distance between the locations is not far, we managed to visit all of them. They even let us in after 9PM at Kuipke although we were actually too late. I really enjoyed it although the exhibit at St-pietersplein was packed with people.

I have not missed the Gentse Floralien since I was 14 and am now in my 50's. We travelled from England to find ourselves spending more time sitting on coaches going from one venue to the next. We saw little of the spectacular event I have grown to love over the years. Some excellent displays, but on this occasion not worth overall spending on hotels and travelling from the UK to Belgium. The wristband was so tight it cut my wrist which did not help either. Please please revert to your original excellence !

Hard to explain - kind of "floral contemporary art"
Apr 2016 • Friends
I can't figure out how to rate it, so I went middle of the road with three stars. I think everyone visiting Floralien will have a very subjective experience of it, so let me just try to explain what it is rather than just rate it, so you can tell whether you might like it.

I thought it was a flower show, but that is overly reductive. It's really an art show made out of flowers. The point is not so much the flowers, but the art that people have made by arranging them in very unusual ways, sometimes like sculptures and sometimes kind of like abstract art. The most "normal" thing you might see is a bush of azaleas. Most of it is far from normal. It's like visiting a contemporary art museum that only accepts pieces made with flowers.

Some practical advice - you can pay $30 or $35 for a day ticket. Or you could wait until after 7pm and pay $10 or $15 (can't remember exactly) for a ticket until closing (2 or 3 hours). That's plenty of time to see it and saves you some money, if you're staying in Ghent. We thought it would be a great thing to do in the rain, but it is definitely not! There are 4 or 5 sites with the Floralien exhibits, and they are all within walking distance of each other, but you do have to walk between them outside. Although there is a courtesy bus that runs between sites and the train station, we only found it once (though we were grateful to find it that time).

Also, only a few of the sites (maybe half?) were covered/indoors. A lot of it was outdoors or at least involved walking outdoors between covered areas. And some of the outdoor areas were flooded by the rain, so there were pools of water you had to try to avoid. Some of them were also muddy. By the time we had walked through 3/4 of Floralien in the rain, my shoes, feet, and the bottom 6 inches of my pants were covered with mud and soaked through. I had to hose off my shoes and pants at the hotel, and it took the shoes 2 days to finish drying. And I had tried to avoid the rain/puddles/mud as much as possible, so this really wasn't a rain-friendly activity!

Plan your trip for five years time
Apr 2016 • Family
This is an amazing flower festival that happens every five years, so plan a trip for 2021! This is flowers rather than garden and centres around azaleas and begonias which are grown around the area. The festival has been going since the late 1800s, the history and the architecture along with the flowers make this very special. This year it was in four different areas, which some did not enjoy, however as it blended with the architecture of the city I thought it was really atmospheric and wonderful. We had the thre kids with us and had a full day from 9am until 8pm . Kids loved it

What a dissapointing flower show
Apr 2016 • Couples
We went to floralien 10 years ago when it was all built in the expo centre and as a regular visitor to Chelsea and Hampton court this was certainly on par with these events. So as we were visiting Bruges with friends I suggested we go the same week as the floralien as even if it was raining we would be undercover. This time they decided to hold it in tents to small to accommodate all the people and you queued between each tent in 5 centigrade and hailstones for 40 minutes between tents. My friend said to me this is like queuing for Disney rides, without the ride at the end. This was a total disaster and shambles of an organisation we will never be going again avoid like the plague.
