We arrived too late in the evening to tour inside the citadel, but it was still worth the stop for the exploration available of the exterior and the amazing views from the top. We spent about an hour wandering around, looking at the views, and being impressed by the huge golden turtle. (Not sure what its meaning is, but it was fun to look at!) The citadel is very large and you can walk a lot; we took plenty of great photos looking out over the citadel itself, the city, and the confluence of the rivers (Meuse and Sambre).

The Citadel at Namur is a fascinating historical construction that contains hundreds of years of history on one site. The excellent museum and visitor centre provides an in-depth history of the phases that the Citadel's construction underwent. Some of the maps, models and military artefacts are superb. The guides are excellent and can provide the tours in different languages to suit all visitors. The tour which takes the visitor beneath the citadel is not to be missed and well worth the hour or so that the journey takes to complete; the tunnels are spacious and one should not feel claustraphobic, so don't be put off by the thought of being underground. The key moments in the citadel's history are portrayed at the very places the incidents took place.

The visit of the undergrounds of the citadel are very well worth the time (about 90' with a guide, plus the time to walk on the citadel). You will better understand the role of Namur in European history after this visit.

Namur's reputation is overall underrated, it deserves a visit.

You can reach the citadel by a telepheric or walking (hard climb). The telepheric costs 4,50€ one way and 6,50€ with the return. When you arrive on the top you can choose to go wherever you want or follow one of the 2 routes on the map, you can find all the informations at the info point. The panorama from the top is beautiful. When you walking down the hill you can find 2 bar with tables to have a break and at the end of the walking you find the famous gold turtle “searching for utopia” for an amazing shot.

I walked up the hill to the citadel, although there is a cable car as well, which I took on the way back down. The citadel itself is very impressive, and covers a large area. There is a small museum there which features the history of the area. The tunnels are a must. I had to take a tour in Dutch as that was the only one at the time I was there, but the guide, who was excellent, still explained everything to me in English. A really interesting afternoon spent there. Definitely recommended.

One of the worst experiences I have had in a long time. Arrived by cable car, hardly any signage then directed to the promenade for catering and facilities. This is down a fairly steep winding slope which makes you dread the slog back up to the cable car station. On arriving at the cafeteria you are greeted by something that reminded me of an old fashioned motorway services. Self service machine for hot drinks, one baguette and a sorry looking sausage roll. This was at approximately 12.30, unappetising and a
less than welcoming setting. I did enquire if there was any transport available back to the cable car for my wife who has mobility issues. Just told walk or car, probably wouldn't have asked if I had the latter. Onto the Tourist Train, a bumpy 20 minute ride and the commentary wasn’t working for the first few stops. Why this couldn't be used for transport around the site I'll never know. In the end we walked down the rickety steps back to street level rather than attempt the winding climb back up the hill. A truly miserable experience, if you want to visit a citadel I would recommend going to Dinant instead.

I walked to the top and came back by the cable car 🚡 and it is was worth it. At the middle of the way I visited the museum, where I learned the history of the citadel, and I went on the guided tour of the underground tunnels, that you must not miss. At the top there was also an exhibition and a rose garden. The view of the city was amazing.

A must if in Namur as it's a great bit of history and offers some amazing views. There is a cable car, which we didn't take, but it's nice to walk up too if you are able. It's perfect to explore and we stayed an hour or so just wandering about for free, although there are also other events and paying exhibits too, so you can make much more of it if you have more time to kill.

Namur citadel is indeed very impressive. You can find plenty of history details elsewhereת so I won't bother you with them... Wear good sports shoes and climb up - yes, it's intense workout but well worth the effort! In Corona times, you need to wear a mask. Great place to visit for all ages with good sportive spirit. A few parts are still under construction and there are two coffee houses at the top in different locations, if you get thirsty or hungry. Picturesque view of Old Namur and the rivers that are conjoined there. Loved it!

Nice piece of history. Spacious and be prepared to walk a lot up hill to explore it. I loved the telefrique that takes us directly to the center, dogs are allowed to enter too. Great way to spend a half day in Namur.
