Located half way between Hastiere and Dinant along the Meuse River is Freyr castle and gardens. It shuts for an hour between 1-2. It is a combined fee for castle and gardens and English translation sheets are available for each.
The formal gardens were a little battered such as the geometric garden we first took as a maze. There were formal ponds and fountains and some pleasant views.
The castle itself has a 10 room self guided tour which focused on art and furniture and the use of the castle through its various owners. There were some nice features such as a Swiss style cabinet with stunning landscaped alpine scenes on each drawer. The Grand Hall was impressive over two levels and numerous hunting scenes featured on the walls. There were photographs showing a flood in Feb 1995 and the restoration works that followed. From many of the windows you could see the Meuse.

The premises of the chateau are beautiful; it is sorrounded by mountains and the river. The interior is gorgeous as well. The only problem is to visit the Chateau if you do not own a vehicle. We took the 154A from going back and for from the train station. I would suggest to limit the visit to one hour because you definitively would not want to stay there for three hours. Another option is to take a taxi from the train station and then take the bus to go back. Ask the taxi driver about the price first.

Freyr castle was erected by William of Beaufort from 1571 onward on the site of an older fortification. The edifice was significantly expanded between 1604 and 1637 and modified in the second half of the eighteenth century.

Visitors are warmly welcomed by a multilingual staff. About twenty rooms can be admired with the help of information leaflets.

The tour tells the history of the Beaufort family who have held the castle for twenty generations. Various characters are portrayed in amusing and vivid anecdotes. Simultaneously clever references are made to major historic events from the seventeenth to the twentieth century.

The information regarding furniture and paintings is basic enough for novices but offers a little extra for people with advanced knowledge. A perfect balance !

After the tour of the castle visitors can relax in the eighteenth century French gardens, crowned by a rococo belvedere and renowned for their orange trees.

Hint for the staff : Start the tour with a an architectural evolution of the castle supported by drawings so as to gain insight in its present layout. Also equip visitors with a family tree in order to distinguish generations and point out kinship.

Hint for visitors : Check out the castle website after your visit. It lists even more fascinating anecdotes about the former residents.

Everyone here was so nice- we had a warm reception and every question we had was answered. We even were given some great historical facts not part of the tour. The castle was worth coming to if you are visiting Dinant. Just a warning though- if you don't have a car and are taking a bus-- look at the bus times! There are some 2-3 hour gaps and you are dropped off in the middle of a busy highway-like road. We had to wait over 2 hours for a ride home! Besides that, the gardens were the best part of the castle. The inside wasn't grand but it was nice and informative.

Looked great! But we've been stopped right from the start as they do not accept credit card payment... Really disappointing that no one (not the tourist office, nor the multiple guides) told us about this "detail".

We are really sorry that we cannot accept credit card but it is too expensive for a familial private one castle (and too small amounts). We are searching for an on line payment solution but we have first to resolve the problem of connectivity to the born (more difficult in the countryside).

Nice tour with information fully available in English. The chateau gives a good view of life for a family of the lower nobility in an incredibly scenic spot on the Meuse. Well preserved, nicely presented, with a fair admission price. Commentaries were more insightful than those in most historic houses.

The commentaries are the continuous works on 40 years of members of the family, our guides and our visitors, each one contributing to a better understanding of the place

There was a day when this was a grand place visited by grand people. Many signs of this are still there to be admired. And yet it's the fine storytelling, bringing to life ordinary and less ordinary people and their endeavours in prosperous and difficult times and the humorous anecdotes shared, that really persuaded us to love and enjoy this place. We were here on a bitterly cold spring day, but those two oranges which grew on the centuries old trees which had been stored for winter, the cheerful faïence china, the stories about the Gilda's that once lived there and raised their children and managed the big house, the silly add-ons which were made by less talented local painters to paintings which had become too small for the extended room... but also the very friendly volunteer staff... it all warmed our hearts and made our visit a wonderful experience! No, it's not Versailles with its grand splendour, but we enjoyed the quiet charm of this place more!

Tip: We recommend you call the castle to check out if it is open or not. The opening hours mentioned in brochures and on the website do often not correspond with the actual opening hours.

Garden's are beautiful and full of orange trees, the Chateau is very grand and there is a lot to be seen.
Considering the price they charge for entry it would have been nice to have had a cafe to sit and have a rest a coffee and maybe a bite to eat, rather than having to make one's own drinks from a coffee machine, if my wife and I had known how limited we were going to be we would have take our own food and drinks.

Fair price, great location and garden. I would say definitely check it out. If you take the bus make sure there are frequent times back to Dinant. We were stuck for two hours waiting for the bus back to town. The trip takes at most 45 minutes and the garden really is awesome. The staff is friendly and the price is worth it.
