A brief but charming review of the epic of old Liege 리에주의 역사가 깃든 멋진 성당
May 2019
How lucky enough to visit this Eglise St Jacques on Monday morning! Not so crowded, we had meet the historiographer in the church and he had the kindness and time to show us the double stairways, and to share the fascinating story about the old city! Children were so enchanted to listen about the old politicians' power game and thoughtful architects with skills and ideas. :) It was memorable and interesting in the St Jacques and we wished we had a little more time to explore. I am so grateful to the kind prof at the church. Sir, by your generosity opened our eyes how to enjoy and learn from the distant field trip.

The volunteers that guide and advise visitors here really do make a wonderful attraction an excellent one. Their knowledge add another layer to your visit and really lift what would be an otherwise interesting visit. Even my ten your old son, who is not impressed with architecture or history, said it was "Epic!", very high praise indeed. There are signs and information boards so you know what you are actually looking at, there are organ festivals, and even on a bad day, a short visit here is a memorable one. But if you meet a good guide, as we did, WOW! We were taken around and shown some really interesting places that we'd have otherwise missed. Very enjoyable and the highlight of our visit to the area.

Like a couple of other churches in Liege, the St. Jacques is really worth a visit.

The stained glass and wood work are definetly a must see.

Too bad the outside was being renovated during my visit

Only a few minutes from the center, one of the most important churches in Liege. It is open only 10:00 - 12:00 every day. When I visited it was open and when I get in, a lady guide welcome me and she told me a few things about the church. She only speak French so I didn't understand and she gave me a printed guide in English. The church is amazing. In the apse you find stained glass windows from 1525. On the columns of the nave there are barock statues in wood painted white to imitate marble. In the back of the church the organ built in 1600 sits on a gothic roodscreen with the gallery of apostles. When I visited the church, the organ was playing, and I was lucky to listen to the amazing sound. The church is dedicated to St. James the Minor, but it has also a relic of St.James the major which was brought in the year 1056. Both relics are in the shrine of the St.James Chapel. The romanesque crypt and some other nearby remains can be visited on reservation. Not to be missed if you visit Liege.

Why close a church during the day, me thinks?! Saint James / Saint Iago walkers, Camino pilgrims plan for this church when open! Stunning from the outside. Inside? Thanks for other TA users!

We were extremely lucky when we arrived at this beautiful church to be taken around by a marvellous guide called Madame Lemaire. She had perfect English and told us a great deal about the history of Liege as a big religious centre and how the Church had survived. She took us to see the relic of St James the Major and told us how it was acquired from Santiago. She also took us up to a gallery to get a really good look at the marvellous stainglass windows.

We came here a couple of minutes after working hours, but the door was still open, so we came in. A marvellous example of Gothic architecture, splendid and plain, with amazing stained glasses. It's huge and full of different details, which you can admire for a long time. Also there was a very nice man, who told us a lot of interesting things (how the roof is made for example) and even showed us some pictures of them. Though I understand very little French, I understood almost everything he was talking about. He also gave us a paper with all information about the church on English. So we got a private guided tour around the empty church :) Definitely a must see in Liege!

This huge, very well crafted church hosts a lot of relics and other religious items. It is easily accessible by bus, and there are many parking lots around. Moreover, it is only a few minutes of walk from the town center and all its activities

I like Church Buildings that have more than a nod to what Christianity is all about.

To that end I was delighted with the exhibition which was on display here, with various Bible passages and scenes providing the artists with their inspiration.

The bright sunshine and simple high level yellow windows cast fabulous shades across the floor and seats.
