Permanent exhibition: 'From neanderthal to Gallo-Roman' Discover the multifaceted story of man in the Limburg region: from prehistory to the end of the Roman period. Familiarize yourself with the major transition points and marvel at more than 2,000 objects from the museum’s own collection, beautifully presented in a highly-original set by Niek Kortekaas and De Gregorio & Partners. Temporary exhibition: 'Timeless Beauty' This exhibition signals a departure from what you usually expect from the Gallo-Roman Museum. An evocative interplay of images of sensual nakedness by the art photographer Marc Lagrange, intriguing texts by Roman authors and authentic objects leading you deeper into the mysteries of feminine beauty.

Visiting the museum is a good way to pass some time and learn some history. With us only having to pay €1 for the entry to the permanent exhibition it was well worth its money. Would recommend.

Impressively large museum for such a town like Tongeren. Very interesting exhibition on history and anthropology of the Limburg area, dating back to over 500'000 years BC. Nice for children also/in particular. And of course lots of exhibits on the Roman history of Tongeren....! Most...More

We went to the museum with the intent of focusing on the Roman Era. The exhibition however starts way before this and works towards the Roman era as you cross the different levels. The focus of the Roman era probably only accounts for approximately 25-30%....More

Very interesting and well-done museum. We were given a book with the English explanations. It was easy to use and we actually liked it better than audioguides at other places, as we could skim over parts of it that we found less interesting, Great museum...More

This museum chronologically walks you through a history of Tongeren. I grew up locally but my children grew up in Ireland and I have been pleasantly surprised how much they learned especially of how the Romans colonized the world. They liked the visual town models,...More

My wife and I enjoyed this museum. We don't speak French nor German but we were able to get a guide in English. Good museum for the history buff!

The story of the Romans in the area as seen by the local people with the invasion, centuries of Roman culture and the decline. Occasionally there are special exhibitions to combine with the permanent collection.
