A must see in Tongeren : very interesting permanent collection and temporary exhibitions!
Mar 2021
The Gallo-Roman museum is by far the best museum to visit when you're in Tongeren.

My husband and I have visited it several times over the years.
The museum not only has a very interesting permanent collection which takes you from prehistoric times to Roman times; but it also hosts several high quality temporary exhibitions.

In March 2021 we went to the exhibition about the Romans, where many objects were on loan from the British Museum.
Short films with actors posing as citizens or slaves in Roman times give an insight into the society of that time, and enliven the exhibits.

A very interesting museum for young and old !!!

impressive
Jan 2021
As recommended i visited it slowly and indeed it took me 2 hours. The combination of objects, mannequins and movies worked very well. I "relived" my entire history of what kind of person I have become and what kind of culture I am living in.

Educational and interactive
Oct 2019 • Couples
Educational and very interactive. Love it how they build up from early to late history. Lots of detailed work and objects are shown. It’s a very hands on learning guide. You’re even allowed to leave and reenter with the ticket.

And Ovid than?
Dec 2019
I may be mistaken but I have seen the exhibition entirely with the help of an audioguide, and to my deepest astonishment never encountered any mention of Ovid.
Ovid lived almost ten years in Tomis, beginning of the first century.
Glory to the poet! Shame on those who have forgotten him!

We've been in this museum and were impressed! Very good audio guide, a lot of attraction about history for kids, very realistic figures of ancient people, Romans and others. Very good exhibition about spreading humans on earth and beginning of the development with video screens, things, movies, etc. Recommended for all ages depends on language knowledge. Pict - view from museum.

WONDERFUL MUSEUM!!
Oct 2019 • Couples
My boyfriend and I loved this museum; I am American, an expat that moved to Belgium- and I have traveled around the world, seen different types of museums.
This museum first and foremost cared about your native tongue- you had the choice to hear about the exhibits in Dutch, French, German and English. My boyfriend is Belgian- he listened in Dutch; I, being American, listened in English. It made the exhibits more tangible when you could hear and see the small details you might miss, looking at it on your own.

There was a lot for children; puzzles to solve, cute pictures to take- and of course, these things can also be fun for adults ;)

You will learn some amazing & very interesting facts about the area you are visiting- Tongeren, being the oldest city in Belgium. The museum and the special exhibitions are worth the visit to Tongeren; I also suggest you look for a better hotel than Eburon Hotel if you stay for a few days-
ENJOY!!

A super museum for those interested in local and Roman history. Recommended!
Oct 2019
The Gallo-Roman Museum is perfect for those with an interest in Tongeren and local Roman history. We really enjoyed our visit as the rooms are well laid out and show the historical development of the area with lots of emphasis on local ancient Roman culture.

The museum begins with a display of hunting tools and artifacts which illustrate life in the area 500,000 years ago when the direct ancestors of the Neanderthals settled nearby. As you pass through room after room you see the changes in the cultural development of the area, from farming communities to the conquest of the area by the Romans, the founding of Roman Tongeren, and finally the withdrawal of the Roman army, the decay of the city, and the establishment of the Germanic warlords.

Life-size figures in resin showing in detail the dress, activities and culture of the various historical eras, scale models of villages, maps, audio guides, video and artifacts all help bring this historical period to life.

We visited the cafe for a coffee and a piece of cherry cake, which we enjoyed very much. The cafe was clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. We stopped by the gift shop on our way out and saw items in various price ranges from "Roman" soldier costumes, children's story books about Roman times, and affordable costume jewelry for children, to more serious Roman historical adult fiction and non fiction books and (more expensive) jewelry for adults.

We had a super time and throughly enjoyed ourselves. Recommended for anyone with an interest in Roman history!
