Who said Cistercian nuns didn't know how to make money? Despite the Rule of Benedict, these medieval nuns really knew how to live a self-sufficient and wealthy lifestyle. This is a very interesting and historical building. Currently there's an information centre plus it also hosts...More

There are several nice walks that start at the main gate of the abbey and they are all lovely. The inside of the building is not accessible as a tourist attraction. There is a very nice children's book shop in the old buildings and a...More

The museum gives an overview of the 600 years of history explained (audio guide) by the abbesses (a very nice gimmick) - took us about 1,5 hours ... we also visited the herbs garden (very well laid out), but, as it was april, unfortunately still...More

Herkenrode Abbey is one of many abbeys that you can visit in Belgium. On certain dates in the summer there are free tours which are a great way to learn more about the history of this abbey, that unfortunately, has undergone many alterations and had...More

Historically the abbey is very interesting. I don't live in Belgium but as a child I do remember the abbey as being decrepit. Seeing the restoration now is fantastic, a lot of patient and careful work has gone into this. There is a good museum...More

The building itself is not spectacular but interesting enough to warrant the entrance fee. Not many original objects, but pictures and models. The garden is much more interesting. Well kept and laid out. Worth a visit.

Over the last two decades, the abbey has been beautifully restored and given a new purpose. The expansive and educational herbal garden, by itself, is more than worth a visit. The surrounding area is worth exploring on bicycle as well.

This takes a bit of finding, but was well worth it. Parking is free and we visited on a hot sunny day outside of school holidays. The museum story was very interesting. We were supplied with English audio guide which worked very well. Outside were...More

Recommended stop when taking a walk or riding your bike. But it's definitely worth a visit if you can attend an organized events. My kids are still talking about our last visit to the `Sage van de Eenhoorn` (folktale of the unicorn).

This recently renovated historic location is an excellent pick to visit on a beautiful day. You can stroll around the grounds and gardens, or have a drink or a snack on the restaurant with plenty of outdoor seating (I recommend their selection of fresh pie!)
