There are many medieval paintings on the theme of St Luke painting the Madonna and Child. Not sure why the idea of sculpting the theme was adopted by Tournai or who the sculptor was, but it's a large piece of unusual public art that's worthy of one minute of your time and a photograph as you pass by. It's right next to the entrance to the Cathedral.

Despite the rain this sculpture group in enamelled bronze had a lovely warm glow to it. As had the glazed roof tiles of the cathedral’s Saint Louis Chapel just opposite. The sculpture represents St. Luke Drawing the Virgin, a theme taken from an early painting (1435) by Tournai-born painter Rogier de la Pasture or Rogier van der Weyden. His name and dates of birth and death are inscribed on the base. Saint Luke is sitting on the lowest of four blue stone steps, whereas the Virgin, breastfeeding baby Jesus, is sitting at the top. We quite liked this striking work by Belgian sculptor Marcel Wolfers (1886–1976). A pity about the weather though.
