Since we visited the ‘Patinoire Royale’ for the first time we have been back several times because we just love the place. The Patinoire is a covered roller skating rink dating from 1877. Since then it has been put to different uses and today houses a contemporary art gallery. The building has been beautifully restored. Behind the white neoclassical façade lies a wowing exhibition space. Last time we visited auction house PIASA was presenting work of Belgian sculptor Olivier Strebelle (1927-2017) and design of the second half of the 20th century. A combination that worked very well.

Somewhat under-publicized since its opening in 2015, this former roller skating rink, built in the late 19th century, now houses exhibition spaces run by well-respected gallerists known for the quality of the work they represent. So any visit presents not only a chance to appreciate the excellent renovation of an open, light-filled space but also a chance to take an unhurried look at modern or contemporary work unpretentiously staged to appear to best advantage. We saw the magnetic sculptures by Vassilakis Takis in combination with furniture by French designer Jean Prouve: not an obvious combination but one that worked really well by subtly drawing attention to the old form/function spiel. Looking forward to returning.

And free entrance... A wonderful place that the best French operators on the international art market gave to Brussels. If you are an art lover, you must go and visit this private gallery. This old rink was renovated and converted into a magnificent exhibition place, not too big, quite cosy. Very well.
