As avid travellers we always looked forward to our next trip abroad but now Covid has thrown a spanner in the work. One of our ways to fight discouragement and boredom is to explore our backyard, so to speak, as if we were foreign tourists. So we picked up the 16 Neighbourhoods Walks in Brussels (also available on the Visit Brussels website) for some serious sightseeing. The walk in the Bailli and Châtelain area brought us to the famous Hotel Tassel on rue Paul Emile Janson. Architect Victor Horta designed this Art Nouveau house in the early 1890s for a friend, the university professor Emile Tassel. We adored this elegant house with its beautiful bow window. What a shame the house is not open to visitors. We would have loved to have a peek inside.

We stopped to see Hotel Tassel, an early Horta building in the fledgling Art Nouveau style. Not open to the public, and without signage, we couldn't tell what its current status, and it wasn't possible to see inside. As a beautiful example of early Art Nouveau, it was still worth seeing.

This building was designed by Victor Horta and is considered the first true archetype of the then new Art Nouveau November. Sadly, the Hôtel Tassel is currently a private office and inaccessible to the public, so you can only admire it from the outside. The building is a UNESCO listed site along with Hôtel Solvay, Hôtel van EetveldeMaison and Atelier Horta, and historically important for architecture and Art Nouveau. So, although it's well off the tourist circuit, it's worth a look of you have extra time in Brussels.

Words are not enough to describe the feeling and the view. Breathtakingly beautiful. Too bad it is so difficult to get in.

It is always nice to come back from a city break having discovered something new, different or even the totally unexpected. For those who have even a slight interest in Art Nouveau style architecture, this house, built in 1893 and named after the man who commissioned it, the scientist Emile Tassel, is a hallowed place. It is generally acknowledged to be the first faultless example of its type in the world and it's architect, Victor Horta, is hailed as one of the founding fathers of the genre. There are parallels of his work in some of Gaudi's ingenious creations in Barcelona and Hector Guimard found inspiration in Tassel for his designs for the station entrances to the Paris Metro. The building is well preserved and retains a high degree of authenticity thanks to the prodigious care of its owners down through the years. Is there a theme and an excuse for a three city tour around Europe with this as a topic? Why not, "An rud is annamh, is is iontach". Useful tip: The Brussels Art Nouveau Map is of great benefit to enthusiasts, providing interesting walking tour itineraries and some practical background facts and figures. An interesting twist on a visit to Brussels!

The building was the first one to showcase a new Art Nouveau style in architecture, so if you have some extra time and are willing to take a tram here, it would be worth it. As people before me mentioned, you can't enter the building as it is in private ownership at the moment.
