Place St Catherine is always crowded. A fun winter market during the chilly season, and a popular spot for mingling and eating during the warmer ones. Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy the seafood with a chilled bottle of white.

The church isn't worth a special trip, but the Ste. Catherine area of the city is an easy walk, and a little quieter, with some excellent cafes. The area behind the church is in decline, or struggling to make a comeback, hard to tell which.

Place Sainte Catherine remains a place where Brussels residents like to go. Whether in fish restaurants, bars, or simply to sit on one of the benches and chat. The Sainte-Catherine church in its center is impressive. In December a splendid Christmas market comes to liven up this pretty square which is worth a visit.

Despite the various reviews commenting on the vibrancy of this public square, I did not feel that when I made my way there during a weekday afternoon; definitely not the kind of buzz that I felt in Grand Place and the thoroughfares around it. Place Ste Catherine is anchored by Saint Catherine’s Church and surrounded by numerous bars and restaurants. Perhaps due to routine maintenance, the shallow pool on the square has been dried up, which further brings out the blandness of the place. Unless you’re here for a meal or drinks, this place is good for a quick look-see, then proceed to your next destination.

This public square sits directly in front of the church from which the square takes its name. The “Gothic” church of Saint Catherine dominates the square. Lots of cafes, bars, restaurants and the water pool of Fontaine Anspach. A very popular place for Bruxellois to hang out and a useful wateringhole after visiting the church.

Avoid Brussels. It is a filthy ,tired place with empty shops, beggars on the streets, surly waiters, rip- off stalls at the Xmas Market, and, to crown it all, a railway station that defies comprehension.. we stayed two hours and that's about 1he 59 too long. Go to Bruges- safer, cleaner and takes pride in itself. Brussels needs to clean itself up. The number of police around is testimony to its dodgy character.

St Catherine is my favourite neighbourhood in Brussels. The fish market, Nordzee & ABC poisonniere are fantastic for fresh fish to take home or eat standing up with a glass of wine (recommend the fish soup!). St Catherine church is beautiful - and there are tonnes of restaurants to chose from - most of which do not need reservations (although the best ones on Rue de Flandre like Selecto, Gramm or Viva M'a Boma you need reservations). There is a nice cultural centre you can check out - across from my favourite Fromagerie. If you have an appetite the all-you-can-eat ribs at Amadeus are always a favourite. And Place St Catherine also has THE best chocolate & Ice Cream shop - Frederic Blondeel. Get your bread & bakery items at the famous Charli.

At Christmas, St Catherine hosts my favourite Christmas markets in the world. They are lovely, festive and quaint. Best raclette sandwiches ever.

The historic Place Sainte Catherine is notable for its many seafood restaurants - some of which are excellent. Within walking distance of the Grand Place, but very slightly off the tourist circuit. In December there is a Christmas market. Very easy to get to by public transport: take the Metro to Sainte Catherine station.

Place Ste Catherine is a short walk from the busy Grand place, surround by many shops, bars and restaurants, that seem to be geared more to locals.
