Overview
More
From the middle ages, a castle overlooked Brussels from Coudenberg hill. From the 12th century, the successive monarchs and their representatives transformed a small fortified castle into a sumptuous residential palace, one of the most beautiful palace of Europe and one of Charles V's main residences. This prestigious building is severely damaged by fire in 1731. Some forty years later, the ruins of the palace are pulled down and the ground flattened out for the construction of the new royal district. The remains of this palace make up the Coudenberg archaeological site.

I came here today and bought a joint ticket with the BELvue museum for 12 euro. The palace itself would have been quite interesting but I could not get my phone to download the audio guide and had to read the signs instead which meant...More

This is free with the Brussels card along with BELvue Museum so you can visit both. We actually accessed the entrance to the Coudenberg after going through BELvue but I am sure there is a separate way to get to Coudenberg without having to visit...More

We visited here on Saturday in the afternoon and found it was not overly crowded. The visit starts with a video which explained what happened to the palace and the reason why the site remains after this you enter 'the womb of Brussels' or whatever...More

We hadn't a clue that this exists under Place Royale in Brussels. When you visit it use the free wifi app or take an audio guide ! Incredible to see that this palace has existed in Brussels.

This is actually a very large site; go in via the Musee Belvue and come out behind the Museum of Musical Instruments on the other side of the road. Mainly this is the basements of the old palace and the road between the two sections....More

An interesting place. There are no dramatic sights but instead a reminder of what was hundreds of years ago. While those with an interest in relevant architectural history may benefit more, I still found it quietly illuminating. When we were there practically nobody else was...More

If you archaeology interests you then go and have a look at the excavations under Coudenberg Palace and discover the original fortifications underneath the palace that formed part of the original castle. After the tour there is a small museum with the background and history

From the outside it's not really clear what's inside, except from the old palace and that there will be viewings of the excavations. Entrance is cheap: 5-7 euros Inside there's not much to actually see. You see the excavations but you mostly just walk through...More
