About
The National Bank of Belgium houses its museum in a magnificent nineteenth-century bank building. This is the perfect backdrop to get acquainted with the activities of a European central bank and the history of money. Use the audio guide to visit the museum (free) and test your knowledge of the Eurosystem or try to keep inflation under control. Find out how euro banknotes and coins end up in your wallet. The history gallery is literally the display case of the museum collection and elaborates on the history of the means of payment. You will quickly notice that money then did not always look like money now.

Beautiful building. Friendly stuff. Awful acoustics - the children are loud and a lot of sound enhancement.Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten May 16, 2024
- Y galaxy11 contributionsVery educational and beautiful free museum about moneyVery nice museum! For a free museum very large and much to see. There was an audio tour available - no use of it. Learned a lot about the history of money, in a nice and clear timeline. Very nice that there are free museums and especially on such an important subject. All in all a fun and interesting experience that is definitely worth it if you are in the area.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 7, 2024

The content of the displays is very interesting and there are some fun interactive games to play. For a free museum it's excellent. The staff are so friendly. I will drop in again if I'm in Brussels.Visited January 2025Traveled as a coupleWritten January 1, 2025

Had a lovely morning in this museum. Friendly welcome and the entry was free. We were given head phones and audio equipment to listen to interesting extra information on the way round. The history of money is clearly explained and there
were a few interactive quizzes which we enjoyed too. It's well laid out. It was very quiet which was nice for us but also a pity as this museum deserves more visitors. Afterwards we were allowed to print some money with our faces on it !! Fun !!
I would not recommend it for families with small children.

Unexpectedly a very interesting and nice museum, free and yet very well conceived. Very interesting. The first floor provides a lot of information about the history of money, on the ground floor you will find more information about the role and importance of the National Bank, but also of ECB, IMF and other international institutions... Really cool and interesting, and close near the center so easy to combine with other viewings in Bxl.

What a museum! Firstly it's free entry which is always a bonus.
They have a wonderful set up here, there is plenty to see and do! you get to explore the Euro and other currencies prior to the forming of the Euro, they have interactive games you can play, it's quite a high tech set up and my fiancee and I really enjoyed it.
It's not a very large museum and doesn't take long to get around it, but it is certainly worth a visit.
They also have a photo booth at the end where you can take a photo and it gets printed onto some play euros!
was really fun !

We were very excited to visit the (Museum of the National Bank of Belgium) we struggled a lot to get there. We had done some research and knew that the museum was wheel chair accessible. My husband does not use a wheelchair but he uses a cane, he cannot climb stairs, so we asked if there was a lift, and the person who "attended" us was very rude and with a "smile" told us "NO". We had seen images in internet of the museum where we saw a lift, we simply felt discriminated against by the staff.
I sent an e-mail where I complained about what happened. And although they assured that it would not happen again, the truth is that we had very limited time and itinerary when traveling, now I am at home in the U.S.A.
And it is sad that due to the arrogance of a member of the staff it was unfair not to know the museum.

Very nice little museum in a lovely building. Lots of interactive bits with a great audio guide.
Enjoyed my hour there and would have spent longer if I had had more time.

While the history of money isn't for everyone, this small gallery, which has free admission, is worth a look from a historical point of view. It was informative about what types of materials were used as money, and how the currency of particular cities got their names. Belgium currently through the centuries is presented artistically and explained.
