- Ruben L31 contributionsIt was a nice, not too big park. Really nice that you stand in a square and can just choose where you go without following a specific route. The paths did need replacing. With a wheelchair you really don't want to get there, there were holes in the road everywhere and it was a big mud pool. There was a lot for children to do, such as lots of climbing equipment to see the animals up close. We were also in a big climbing route😂. Spacious enclosures with plenty to do for the animals. Also some special species such as the Somali donkeys, mhorrgazelles, dorcasgazelles and the wapiti. I found the hospitality very mediocre, they had 6 takeaway points and one real restaurant where you could sit, but there they also only had chips and hamburgers. So tip: bring your own. There were also many animals to see inside, nice on a rainy or cold day, for example. There was also an event going on: Pay attention! Park will be open until 4 am in January 2025! It didn't look that special and didn't add that much. So I don't recommend the event.Visited January 2025Traveled with friendsWritten January 5, 2025
- Maximilien GBelgium1 contributionZoo Planckendael is a family-friendly zoo located in Mechelen. It’s a great park to visit on a sunny day in Belgium! It has a lot of different animals to visit with an area of 46 hectares! Planckendael is an enjoyable park to explore with your family and friends on the weekends. The Zoo offers a variety of activities and special events (such as bird shows). There are also plenty of playgrounds where kids can play and even swim (next to the Bonobo shop)! It also provides educational experiences with the signs explaining different animals and where they come. The food options are not too good and healthy. It’s more something like fast food. While Planckendael offers typical fast food options such as vol-au-vent, meatballs in tomato sauce, spaghetti, doner, fish & chips, … Fortunately, they also offer healthier food options like sandwiches, salads, soup, … I recommend this. The Zoo is divided into different zones (per country) which make it easy to see the animal you want. This organization helps visitors navigate the zoo more efficiently. Each zone is tailored to the natural environment of the animals it houses, offering a deeper understanding of diverse ecosystems and their inhabitants. Zoo Planckendael is a good spot for a day on a weekend, with fun activities and educational opportunities. While the park mainly offers fast food, there are also healthier options. The zoo’s layout makes it easy for visitors to find their way around and visit their favorite animals.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 18, 2024
- DanThe Hague, The Netherlands9,246 contributionsWe have been wanting to visit this zoo for a very long time. Maybe autumn wasn’t the best season to choose, because there was quite some refurbishing going on. Which was reflected in a €5 discount per ticket. The weather during our visit was great, for the time of year. The zoo has very nice exhibits and a lot of playgrounds. The latter not being that handy for your children, because as soon as they see a playground, they want to play there. A centralised playground would’ve made more sense. Other than that we will be back here in the summer to enjoy this zoo without the muddy paths for sure!Visited November 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 10, 2024
- 4_A_E_B_4Province of Olbia-Tempio, Italy69 contributionsDefinitely a nice place. The animals have large spaces available. This means that to see them it is sometimes necessary to wait for them to pass by as they are not "in the shop window". I recommend dedicating a full day because it is truly worth it. The park is very large and I think it is suitable for adults and children. There are all the services (bathrooms, refreshment points, picnic areas, play areas, smoking areas, souvenir shops). I think we will happily returnVisited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 6, 2024
- Roger K5 contributionsAfter Recommendation from a colleague I went there with my son on Wednesday 25 September. Well, can tell you, it's a beautiful zoo. The space the animals have, great. That, in my opinion, is the point. That they end up in a habitat that is suitable for them. Upon arrival I wanted to buy tickets in one of the devices you encounter on the way from the parking lot to the entrance. However, these did not work. After considering walking on they kindly helped me at the entrance to sell the tickets plus parking ticket anyway and they would look into the problem. One piece of advice, especially if it has rained, put on good walking shoes. For the rest, good hiking trails, certainly good declaration where wheelchairs have or do not have passage. The bins, well, that does need a little more attention. With many benches, the boomerang benches are great by the way, they could put some extra waste bins there. Anyway, nice zoo where you can spend some hours. Chapoo Mechelen, Belgium.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 27, 2024
- AngelicaSchiedam, The Netherlands17 contributionsPark looked nice and clean, despite us thinking there could be more trash cans. We've seen almost every animal. If you follow the paths by continent you will pass everywhere. The animals can also be seen from multiple perspectives. Animals have quite a lot of room to move compared to other zoos. Every continent has a playground or adventure path. Our daughter of almost 4 loved it. Food and drinks we had brought ourselves given the other reviews. Just bought an ice cream. Only downside to the animals I found the location of the cheetah. In addition to this enclosure, there were animals that the cheetah could see / smell well so that one of the cheetahs tried to get to it continuously. Something that is not going to work of course...I thought it was pathetic...can cause frustration. Furthermore, highly recommended this park! Tip in good weather: bring an extra set of clothes for the children. There is a low tide area where you can play.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 21, 2024
- Roam4565522142434 contributionsBeen here 3 years ago during the corona period. Paths are still as bad as they were back then. Large pits and puddles everywhere. Not convenient with a buggy. In urgent need of renovation. Nice walking paths with climbing equipment along the side. Food very expensive for what it is. The restaurant was extremely busy and somewhat refectory-like. Totally inefficient at the greenhouses, which meant we had to wait a long time. Food was cold by the time we sat at the table. Beautiful enclosures and easy to see animals. Playground is outdated and too small for the number of children. Nice hidden places.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 11, 2024
- Michèle MAntwerp, Belgium2 contributionsSuper nice park, but the food is really substandard and expensive. Beeper wasn't working, so our food was cold. It was suggested to give new fries. The "new" ones were just as cold. Bring your own sandwiches is the message!Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 23, 2024
- Vacation2138096686512 contributionsA superb family day under a beautiful July sun. There are many trees which makes it very pleasant even on a hot summer day. Super well suited for children of all ages. Many animals, beautiful enclosures. We didn’t think it was that big. We took 4 good hours to go around the whole park. Nice surprise. We will come back:)Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 28, 2024

The car park is located quite far from the entrance.
The lines are getting longer because the staff is overwhelmed between subscribers, one-day tickets, online payments, such bonus tickets and smartphone tickets...
The whole park is not very clean.
Many enclosures are empty and animals (well) hidden or apathetic...
The toilet is dirty too.
A nine wouldn't hurt.
On-site rates are exaggerated: 4.5€ hot dog, drinks 4.5€ for a small bottle of tea... and pancake (cold, torn in half) at 6.5€. The staff is too overwhelmed by the "world"...
You think visitors are paying pigs...

The welcome is reasonable but the person at the control of the tickets is extremely rude and arrogant! The park is a sad affair: in half of the park there is nothing to see due to renovation, or animals are "temporarily" not to see or almost no animals by theme !also the clothing is extremely sad!also not to get a drink or ice cream (only in restaurant or 1 small hut). This "attraction" costs 36,5€ and it is scandalous that one dares to ask this for this "zoo"! This park is ABSOLUTELY AVOIDABLE!!! Had high expectations for this but what a disappointment!!!gets 1 in 5 here because 0 can't be!

I often came more than 10 years ago with the children because it was the most beautiful animal park with games for children everywhere. We are coming back with the grandchildren and what a disappointment! All the games that lined the route were half destroyed. The park has not been renovated. It's very old-fashioned. There is almost no explanation about the animals and the children therefore do not know how to answer the treasure hunt questions. The restaurants indicated on the map are closed except for one! The entrance with parking is very expensive for what it is and especially compared to Pairi Daiza which has actually become 15 times more beautiful than Planckendael. My heart ached to see how this park had deteriorated.

I have been a member of Planckendael and Antwerp Zoo for many years since childhood but now living abroad I’ve not had a yearly visit or 2 or 3 like I used to. I have visited in august 2021 and for the first time as an active wheelchair user. I must say I am very impressed with the quality of the enclosures and the way it is now laid out. My son and partner enjoyed the walk through the trees and we all loved seeing the freedom of roaming for the animals as well as the diversity of animals looked after in this zoo with information presented about them. I would thoroughly recommend visiting and appreciating this Zoo as a high standard of animal conservation. Also for accessibility this zoo was really very good; I only needed one or two little bits of assistance but able to access all that I wanted.

We visited this park with people over 18. It was beautiful and big. We were barely able to visit the entire park in one day.
I especially think it is a good zoo because most of the animal enclosures are large. Because most animals are not in small cages, it makes the park more animal-friendly and pleasant to walk around.
The atmosphere in the park is good. Had a nice day.
Some restaurants could use better design (e.g. placing openers near the drink bottles so that you don't have to wait in the food line just for the opener if you just want a drink).

Nice park. Wouldn't visit it at full price. Catering on the expensive side, parking 11. Euro...! A family with 2 young children can still charge 150 euros, including food.

I have not been to Planckendael since it was closed for Covid but I have been there many times previously. The Zoo is set in an extensive rural setting and the animals are divided by "continents". They are kept in spacious enclosures and there is quite a lot of variety. Parking is good and the restaurants are acceptable. I am obliged to choose "September 2020" as the date of my visit but clearly this was not the case as the zoo was closed to the public for Covid measures. My last of many visits was November 2019.

Beautifully located, modern zoo, easily accessible by car and public transport. Good parking. Recommended: order tickets in advance online or from the machine in the pedestrian tunnel.
Very large park, with plenty of beautiful walkways. The division into themes makes it easy to measure the distances
Beautiful spaces in 'free' nature for the animals, plenty of space and clearly visible to the public. Being able to take many beautiful photos yourself.
In terms of population, it is certainly comparable to the large zoos in the Netherlands.
Lots of play areas for children. Several restaurants and smaller eateries.
Highly recommended! We immediately converted our tickets into a subscription; We will definitely come here more often!

I visited Planckendael on Sunday afternoon. To reach it from Brussels is easy, parking facility is available (daily ticket is 8 EUR). Entrance to the Zoo is well organised. Tickets for adults cost around 25 EUR and for kids few EUR less. Apparently, there are various options for frequent visitors to pay less. Anyway, value for money is not there because the Zoo itself is not well organized. Signs, maps, description of animals and their habitats... totally confusing, absolutely amateur approach. You can learn very little and you will lose time while finding your way around. They need to improve it. I stayed approximately 4 h at the Zoo and I saw none of the staff there to be at customer disposal for questions, directions etc. The animals... well, I agree, better living conditions necessary, security aspects also needs re-evaluation. LEGO figures kids searched for are nice but I prefer my child to be excited because of a real fox with some educational material available, rather then LEGO fox. It is a bit bizarre to place it in a Zoo. Commercial facilities are few, nothing to highlight. All in all, not worthy of your time if you came there for education.

A brilliant range of animals, wonderful habitats, and great all-round fun made this a perfect family day out before flying back home.
With elephants, lions, cheetahs and more, all living in well-maintained habitats and with enough space not to feel as though they are penned in - the elephants in particular seem to have a vast home - there is much to see and it could easily fill a whole day, and more.
The paths are perfect for pushing a toddler around in his pram. There are stairs on some routes, but always alternatives, while they can see most of the animals very easily without having to get out.
There are playgrounds located at regular intervals, meaning the kids are well catered for when they want a break from looking at the animals. They have different themes and layouts and are they perfect for children from as young as 6 months up for playing in the sand, with more advanced playground equipment for older children. Ours loved the two we stopped at.
There are also lots of toilet stops and bins, which was good to see, with separate recycling facilities next to every waste bin, backing up environmental credentials.
Food served in the various cafes and food huts is what you would expect from any such attraction, without costing the Earth. Sandwiches, snacks, drinks & more can be found at regular intervals.
It’s only 25 minutes from Brussels Airport as well, so perfect for a last-day stop prior to a flight.

Hi, I was just reading reviews of Planckendael and have not come across many that mention its accessibility for people in wheel chairs or on crutches with limited mobility. Would you say this zoo is "disabled friendly" for someone who is slow on their feet and doesnt deal with steps well? I use crutches all the time and need my husband with me as my carer I'm an avid zoo goer in the UK but will be visiting Belgium and Germany for the first time this year and I am keen to visit several zoos.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Leigh
ps can you tell me if this zoo offers a discount for disabled visitors and their carers, as many zoos in the UK do.
Written April 16, 2016
Hello. Yes, the park is accessible by wheel chair, not so sure if it offers a discount for disable visitors. If you visit Belgium, you might consider also Pairi Daiza, it is a better zoo than Plackendael, which is very crowded during week-ends and holidays.
