The name literally means Friday market and it was important in the Middle-Ages as a place to sell secondhand goods. Even today, the market is open every Friday morning. In the center of the market is a statue of St. Catherine who is the patroness of old cloth buyers. The market area is also home to a UNESCO World Heritage museum called the Plantin Moretus Museum.

Vrijdagmarkt is a beautiful square and a very lively area of old Antwerp that we always pay a visit to on any holiday we take to this most beautiful of cities.
Home to the UNESCO World Heritage museum ,Plantin Moretus Museum theres so much beautiful architecture here, some of the buildings here are extremely photographic, make for some great photographic opportunities and there's innumerable pubs, bars and restaurants not just in the square but in the streets leading into the square.
Vrijdagmarkt is easy to locate and is most definitely well worth checking out if your planning a holiday to Antwerp.

This is a lovely little square that has some great architecture abounding on all sides and is home to the beautiful building and museum called Museum Plantin Moretus which is a beautiful museum to the art of printing.
There are several really good pubs, bars and restaurants around the square and a very lively flea market.
It's a vibrant area to visit and one I highly recommend you do on any holiday to Antwerp.
Well worth checking out.

This European flea market is located in the downtown area for the individuals wanting to sell someone elses novelty items. Lot's of locals come to this event and have a good time trying to purchase there goods! Few restaurants & bars located in this area!

Something of a cross between a flea-market and a car-boot sale, the vrijdagmarkt is a not-too-interesting collection of vendors selling their... stuff. There's no "market vibe" here - best avoided.

There is a Friday market here (saves changing the name of it!) but I wouldn't waste your time. It's an auction of of sorts of all the household rubbish people can find to try and flog of. Very much for locals and I certainly wouldn't call it a tourist attraction. The square itself is pleasant enough itself - come on another day and visit the brilliant Plantin-Moretus Museum in the corner. Wednesday's good; being a city-owned museum it's free.

Was there on June 24 and the place was not vibrant however perhaps that is because it is midweek but comparing to the markets in Seattle and Munich this one was quite dead as to human traffic.

There wasn't much going on when we visited this square. There were a few people walking around, some tourists and a few shops open waiting for customers! The square is a lovely spot but nothing extraordinary. It is not really a "must-visit" place, but if you happen to be in the vicinity you might as well walk through this area.

Nice to see you sometime. Not special. Mainly old junk. And if you have your eye on something, you should be lucky that it will be 'auctioned' within a short time.
