Saint Paul's Church is definitely worth a visit. It costs 5 euros to go in but worth every penny. We were the only visitors there and so the staff were more than happy to talk to us abut the church and the paintings within, which was lovely. The interior of the church is striking with so much to see, there are sculptures & paintings everywhere, it really is a feast for the eyes. The Calvary is also amazing to see. The church is currently open from 2 - 5pm everyday up until the end of October.

Slightly off the beaten track tourist wise but well worth a visit to marvel at the wood carving, the paintings, the architecture inside and out, and the unique (for me, at least...I've never seen anything like it before) Calvary/crucifixion reconstruction out back.
Quiet too, peaceful.
Staff very helpful and willing to engage/ chat/explain, or leave you alone if you prefer.
I'm not a fan of paying to get into churches but I felt this one was worth it.

I'm not even a Christian and I found this church to be so beautiful that I had to go back for a second visit. The Calvary is also amazing, I have never seen anything like it on such a scale. This place is worth an hour, relax and enjoy. I have been in hundreds of churches, this is by far one of the best.

You don't have to be at all religious to marvel at magnificent church interiors like this. Or even an art lover to stare at the four huge Rubens masterpieces on the walls. Amazing.

This church has so much to offer; artwork by the masters, beautiful wood carvings lining the walls, the ornate organ, beautiful statuary, and as you're leaving you enter a fascinating calvary garden.
I was struck by the black, white, and dark wood color scheme. It lifts your spirits as soon as you enter. Truly inspiring.

From the outside a beautiful cathedral.
There is an entrance fee of 6€ which made us stay outside.
Don't they have enough money?

Check well the mass attendance times. I stepped in on Saturday 19 September at 3.50 pm. Ten minutes later a mass began. Not the ideal time to walk around in a church and admire the art.

This church, built in the 17th century, is located on the site where the Dominican order was first established. Like many churches in Antwerp you will find works of art by Rubens, along some by Van Dyck and others. However, the most striking work for me was the Calvary. This is outside the church, and you can admire it as you enter. It’s a sculpture woven into the structure of the church which depicts the crucifixion of Christ.
There is plenty more to see inside. The central aisle, decorated with many statues, and high altar are beautiful. The Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary paintings above some very ornate confessionals are unusual (apparently, they were used to help illiterate worshippers to see various stages of Mary’s life while helping them to count out 150 Hail Marys). The treasury costs a bit extra, but inside you can see monstrances, a costume used for the Madonna statue in festivals, and various other items described in a useful information booklet.
I don’t know if it’s permanent, but when we visited there was also a special exhibition bringing together some 19th century oakwood carvings of the stations of the cross and their gilded copies from Staffordshire. They’re not only lovely to look at (I do like a good relief), but it’s fun to play spot-the-difference. Different weapons I can understand, but why no halos on the English works?

Not sure why this isn't rated higher really. The church has stunning frescoes of the Passion of the Christ painted by some renowned artists. Definitely worth a visit, particularly as many tourists don't know about it yet.

Due to the short window the church is open, can you visit the garden without going thru the church? Thank you, Deborah
Written April 24, 2019
To my knowlegde, the garden is only accessible through the church. If you are interested in having a good idea, check "Topa.be" where you will find for St Paul's Church under "Description" a survey with photos of the garden under the name "The Calvary Garden". Enjoy !

Hi, natuurlijk, alle dagen, misschien kan het zijn dat de infostand niet bemand is door de vrijwilligers. In elk geval steeds gratis inkom, vergeet de Kalvarieberg niet te gaan bekijken.
