For this visit we met up with a friend we hadn't seen for many years. We quickly agreed that a(nother) visit to this charming alleyway could not be foregone. It is one of the several quaint ancient alleyways the city boast, but it is most probably the best known one. Despite its renown, it is mostly very quiet. It lies between Hoogstraat (High Street) and Oude Koornmarkt (Old Grain Market) and is positively charming. The ancient buildings and cellars now harbour various restaurants, among others. In summer you might get lucky and catch the Monday evening carillon concerts, as it is one of the prime spots to enjoy this event due to its acoustics.

This is one of the only remaining medieval streets left in Antwerp. It’s sometimes called Vlaeykensgang Alley and it’s only a two-minute walk from Grote Markt which is the main tourist destination for Antwerp.
It's also the main connection walkway to the Cathedral of Our Lady which is a main draw.
We thought the cobblestone walk with the old buildings on either side were a step back into time.

It's a shame there are not more places like this preserved. This winding historical Street feels like something from a work of classic fiction. Remarkably peaceful noting the bustle of foot traffic that passes it by.

We visited as part of a walking tour which is a great way to hear about the history.
Without that it is just a lovely small street, restaurant at the end looks very fancy.
Just off one of the main squares so definitely worth popping in even just very briefly

We visited as a group from our Scenic River Cruise . We had a local guide who told us the history and showed us the sights to see.

These alleyways are lovely , different from the busy city around them . Good to have a guide as we probably wouldn’t have them otherwise.

There is some lovely architecture here . Also you have the lace shops , the beer shops & of course the chocolate shops .

Glad we went , there was lots to see . Much prettier than I was expecting too.

Beautiful, peaceful little lane which twists and turns between Pelgrimstraat and Hoogstraat. It's just near the Grote Markt, and indeed hard to find. Posh restaurant near one end, open in the evening. Plants and benches make for a very pleasant feel.

If you make a stroll in the center of Antwerp, just walk through this narrow street and listen to the sounds you might hear, Sometimes you can relax here while listening to the music of the bells of the cathedral.

This hidden alleyway can be easily missed but it is a shortcut between two major streets. It gives an impression of the medieval old town. Several old doorways and a water pump are features worth looking out for. A restaurant is accessible via this narrow walkway too.

One the one hand it is a shame that just about all little houses (1up 1down) have been transformed into the showrooms of a famous Antwerp antiquarian but on the other hand, if it hadn't been for him, the entire area would probably have been demolished. Well worth a walk through. There are a few more hidden passages like this in Antwerp : Bontwerkersplaats which can be admired through a gate which had to be installed to protect the inhabitants from constant passage, St Nikolaas chapel and square where one of the oldest puppet theatres, Van Campen, still operates.
