The Antwerp Market square is a typical European market square. It is surrounded by lovely historical buildings and cafes and restaurants. The large statue in the center of the square tells the story of how Antwerp got its name. I won’t spoil the surprise!

It's a square. I am sure they have open market here on occasion but it's like the Grand Place in Brussels. Just okay.

This part of Antwerp is beautiful and certainly worth a visit. There are many good places to eat, as well as lots to see.

This city square has beautiful examples of period architecture and remains the skyline remains fairly intact from modern buildings. There was a market on during our visit and looked intriguing however it was too busy to get a proper look.

Beautiful market square in the heart of the old town, with excellent examples of renaissance style low countries building and an immense city hall. Stuffed with nice cafes and sunny terraces

we went when there was no market-but this is still a great walk around-the square is surrounded by cafes, shops-and you can get just about anything you want [except ATMs]-chocolates, frites & beers. great for just wandering.....

A lovely place to while away the time drinking beer at a pavement cafe, with great views of the cathedral and typical low-countries city architecture. Bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants at every turn.

The market square is surrounded by 16th century beautifully adorned multi-storey buildings with statues covered in gold leaf on top. Obviously great wealth was in the city back then. Wonderful that so much has been preserved and not lost in the war. Plenty of cafes...More

After seeing other pictures (and also thinking of what I had seen in Brussels) I was a bit disappointed... not really worth a detour, which I had done now on a very rainy day. Not a must see after all. True a few nice houses...More

As other correspondents have indicated most shops are closed on Sundays and in any case there are very few shops on the Grote Markt itself, it's mainly restaurants and cafes. However just up the street, the Befferstraat... More
