We went for a last minute Christmas Cruise on Brittany Ferries Pont Aven, we PARKED in Antwerp no you don't berth 50 metres from the main road or do you ?
Literally off the ship and across the road into the Grote Market where we had as one must in Belgium "Moules et Frites " a cafe bar whose name I didn't note , apologies, we walked in shown to a table no hassle served coffee and left with menus, all done very professionally on a very busy day, had the mussels they ordered us a cab to Rubens House .
The downside don't do Antwerp on Boxing Day if you need any other transport than a bike /scooter or walking, 55 minutes and 20 euros later Rubens House return 12 euros and ten minutes or if I could have walked it 15mins maximum, BUT it didn't spoil a great visit go if you can.
Brittany Ferries thank you and the 5 course Christmas Lunch was very good value as far fro a Christmas Pud as you could get but great dessert

The 'Grote Markt' (Great Market Square) in Antwerp is located in the heart of the old town. It is a beautiful square with the landmark Brabo Fountain, created by Jef Lambeaux at the end of the 19th Century, that depicts the city legend of the boy with the severed hand of the troublesome giant. At the sides of the square is the City Hall and the stunningly ornate Guildhall buildings. I saw the square at night and it was beautiful all illuminated but I would also love to experience its grandeur in daylight. Plenty of restaurants and cafes to sit at and take in the ambiance and view. Well worth a visit when In Antwerp.

The houses on this square are a beauty to look at. My boyfriend and I have been told that, back when the houses were not identified by numbers, the statues on the top of the houses served as indication of the addresses. Say you live in the house with the archer's statue sitting on top of it. So when you needed to give your address you'd say you live in the archer's house, and so on. I don't know if I made it clear but passing through this square is inevitable as it is right downtown! Plenty of pubs, restaurants, shops around too!

Due to Low Emission Zone rules Antwerp City Center have become inaccessible for Diesel Cars as from Euro 4.
Should you enter by mistake, you will have to pay a 125 euro fine. Same goes for unregistered foreign cars. All vehicles with a foreign number plate must be registered. This rules apply to Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels. Other beautiful Cities like Bruges, Leuven, Hasselt and many more are free of entrance and certainly worth a visit!

The square is quite compact but has centuries of history around it in the form of beautiful houses, many dating from the 17th century with the classical stepped gable ends. Beautiful! And in addition, many of the houses have golden statues on the top, showing some of the professions practiced in Antwerp.

The light from the sun catches on these statues and it is worth having a beer and/or a meal at a table in the square and just soaking up the history.

Most Iconic Point in Antwerp. Must See (be hard to miss). Great story behind the Brabo Statue. I also recommend looking into joining the free tour that starts from the Grote Markt.

This area of Antwerp has the most beautiful architecture and is well worth the visit. The square is not huge, so it's easy to walk around and visit the shops and cafes. It's also fun to take a stroll down the winding side streets just to see the architectural details.

We went there on the last day of the Christmas market. It is centrally located in the old town. There were lots of varieties from food to accessories to choose. We purchased some handmade and local designed jewelry stalls. It was so special with good price.

The Christmas market in Antwerp is centred around Gross Markt but extends along many local streets. It tends to open around lunch time and stay open until quite late at night. It was incredibly busy on the Saturday night before Christmas. There a hundreds of stalls selling foods, drinks and various local wares. You can eat, drink, shop or just wander round and take in the atmosphere.
