A beautiful building and a great old European square, with cafes surrounding it for some good people watching. Most of the building is off limits, so you can watch a brief movie and walk through a small piece of the building. Certainly worth seeing. It's part of the fabric of what is a really nice city.

One would expect nothing less than a glorious building that stands out in Antwerp's city centre to underlie its status as one of the busiest trading ports and most prosperous city in Europe in the 16th century. And thanks to architect Cornelis Floris, the city has such a building in the form of its town hall (Stadhuis) that has stood majestically in the city's main square, Grote Markt, since the 1560s. Listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the Belfries of Belgium and France, this Renaissance-style building with its exterior facade adorned with the flags of all the countries belonging to the European Union is undoubtedly the beating heart of Antwerp's politics and the centerstage for many significant moments in the city's history. In a magnificent square occupied by other eye-catching structures such as the mythical Brabo Fountain and elaborate guildhalls, the Stadhuis is surely the hands-down winner with its impressive beauty and elegance!

When you visit the central historic part of Antwerpen, de Grote Markt you cannot miss the Town Hall (Stadhuis) as it is situated at the focal point of the Grote Markt. It is a beautiful building, built in the 16th century and designed by the architect Cornelis Floris de Vriendt. In 1936 the building was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can book there also guided tours.

Antwerp's Town Hall is an architecturally beautiful building. Its construction dates back to the 1560s, but the history of the site goes back much earlier. The Town Hall was built to match the city's growing stature as an important port and European centre. In recent months the building has been going through renovations and we are not sure if they are now completed.

This building has such character. It was nice to just sit on a bench and stare at it. There is so much detail, that it is intriguing.

We stood in the main square for about 25 minutes on a city tour and the more we gazed at the town hall, the more we noticed the unique features as pointed out by our guide. Things that surely we wouldn’t have appreciated in a rudimentary glance or a quick pic.

The architecture is stunning – an effort of several architects and a mish-mash of different styles and influences. So much detail!

From the type of stone, the mix of different types of columns and the ornately decorated central façade, it is a stunning building! And there’s meaning to every carving, coat of arms and female statue!

The Stadhuis has had different uses over the centuries and undergone numerous renovations and was completely gutted by fire too!
But thankfully, is still stands today in all its glory and beauty for us to enjoy!

A lovely area with lots of restaurants, and a statue purportedly depicting the origins of the name of the city Antwerp.

We went in Feb 2016, it was not at all crowded. There were some police keeping watch over the building. Antwerp city gets its name from the statue of Silvius Brabo (a Roman soldier) throwing hand (hand werpen = hand throwing) in Flemish.
