About
From then on, all visits start at 13, Hopland, where the brand-new building by Robbrecht en Daem architects is your gateway to the Rubens Experience, the lush renovated Baroque garden, and the library. A superb architectural design, a colourful museum gallery without a ceiling, 2,000 metres of books and paper, and a unique experience that is entirely geared towards the comfort of visitors. Thanks to technology, visitors can immerse themselves in Rubens’s life and world in the Rubens Experience. Everyone can browse the many thousands of documents in the library as part of their research. The new garden has become the green extension of Rubens’s city palace. The contemporary design features 17,500 plants and flowers and will remain beautiful year-round thanks to the colour advice of Antwerp fashion designer Dries Van Noten. This verdant urban oasis also has a superb view of Rubens’s home. For now, the artist residence is closed as part of the ongoing restoration.

The main draw here, for me at least, was the house, as opposed to the paintings within, it is a stunning property. Although much altered since, Rubens designed it & lived & worked in it up until his death. It is both quaint & sumptuous, in parts resembling an Italian palazzo. The small garden is also a delight. The art pieces within include some of Rubens own work plus his collection of paintings & sculptures by other artists. Tickets & time slots can be booked online or at the ticket office opposite. Entry is free every last Wednesday of the month but during Covid a book timed slot is still required.

My boyfriend and I went to Rubens House with very little expectations concerning the visit and the museum itself. We were very wrong! The staff that sells the tickets were very nice and polite, there are locks to leave your stuff for the period of the time you spend in the museum. Inside the museum, you will be taken through different - magnificent - rooms, full of paintings and sculptures and some furniture that are amawing to look at. As some people mentioned in the comments, the staff that guards each of the rooms can be surprising. We did not have any issues whatsoever but sometimes they were very loud - which in France, specially in a museum would be considered impolite. Maybe the habits in Belgium are different? Anyways, the whole visit took us around 2,5 to three hours. We did not spend much time in the gardens because it was cold and raining but I'll add a couple more minutes to the visit if you come when the sun's out cause I'd bet that spending some time in the gardens must be amazing. About that, some of it has recently gone through an extensive conservation works and we can learn about it towards the end of the visit. Absolutely reccomend it!

We had a few hours spare and went along to the Rubens House Museum; we were lucky it wasn't that busy and we purchased tickets and an audio system. Be warned you have to lock your handbag/bags in a locker as they are not allowed inside!
However the experience was good and well worth the entrance fee, you could walk at your own pace and listen to the commentary on marked numbered exhibits! The paintings were impressive and learning something about the life and times of Rubens and his contemporaries was very interesting. The gardens were also lovely to wander in, alongside the architecture!

Amazing to be able to walk around Reuben's house - it is opulent and has a huge garden. Reuben's life as an artist is intrinsic to the building so is interesting from this perspective, as well as the art on display. If you are just interested in seeing a beautiful town house from the 17th Century, it is worth a visit for this.

Rubens house is interesting if you like paintings and statues. It doesn't only feature paintings made by Rubens, but also others like Van Dyk's. But the house also gives a idea of what the house looked like.

So great to go to this beautiful house and see how and where he lived. The gardens are also lovely. We were in February so low season and it was still a little busy so I can imagine in peak periods it would be extremely busy.
TIP - Wednesday is free museum day

The Rubens House has long been on my to visit list. I had a day off from work and I decided to book my visit. It was amazing! Such a beautiful building and paintings. A must see if you are in Antwerpen. I loved everything about it. It was very special because we had the entire building to ourselves. The guards in the building were very nice. They were helpful and welcoming. They told us that the museum has a lot of visitors in non Corona times and it was extraordinary that we had it to ourselves. It was so much fun. I would certainly return.

Really enjoyed the rich history and learning on how he was at the highest levels across artists. His paintings are huge so a lot to take in and we had a guide to give us some added insight. the house tour is crowded as its a small place but nice to see pieces of the time and how he lived.

A beautiful step back in time to visit the enchanting life of Rubens. The audio was extremely informative providing a detailed description of life and works of Rubens. It was a pity there was major construction going on and so we were unable to visit the gardens.
Having visited plenty of famous painters houses in The Netherlands I felt this museum lacked the potential of using technology to maybe take us back in time or provide an insight into the world of Rubens.

Much of the house has been recreated, or is original from the time. Many paintings from contemparies as well as the master. Good information on exhibits. Only dislike was paying to come into a museum and then having to pay extra to use the toilet!
