Antwerp was a pleasant surprise, a treasure chest with its cathedral, its beautiful sculptures and the splendid Brabo Fountain. Zaha Hadid's Le Port House was a continuous rush of beautiful emotions and joy. It is the first work of his that I have seen, which I invite everyone to go and see: « I have always been interested in the concept of fragmentation and the idea of abstraction and explosion, deconstructing the ideas of repetitiveness and mass constructions »

The port itself is huge but a large part is industrial with many very large wind turbines. These are not around the centre which is the city itself The city part is dominated by the cathedral(currently undergoing renovation). There are many small streets and large market squares around it and a large area shops (including C&A). The port has an international cruise centre and a good few miles of frontage where you can catch water Buses to cross to the other side of the river or go on longer journeys around the port. I found it vary interesting and varied and unusual.

There is a nice boardwalk that takes you along the waterfront -- with what now seems to be a requisite giant wheel ride like the London Eye.
They have some guided river tours. But I would recommend taking a water bus to the northern port in Antwerp. It is NOT a guided tour but you really get to see the River Scheldt and the commercial activity. Kind of cool to get relatively close to the giant nuclear cooling towers and the port activity. And you can get off at the last stop in the little town of Lillo to visit the pub before heading back.

We took the water bus, which is near the Grote Market. For a few Euro you can tour the entire port and the Schelde River. The boats are clean and modern and very fast. The conductor suggested a small island and town about 5 stops into the trip for a quick bite a a quaint cafe in Lelgos village

This building is an eye-catcher. A glassy modern kind of ship above an old square stone building. What a mix!, a combination of modern and old stuff. It's nice to see. We took a little walk on the area. There are three donkey statues on the square, decorated garbage bins and a hulk hand near the water.

The port of Antwerp is an amazing environment...
Firstly You have the so called "Old Port" around the Bonapartedok, Willemdok and Kattsndijkdok. This area is in full transformation with a lot of bars and restaurant in old warehouses. Unfortunately there are not so many of these old warehouses left, for which we need to thank Mr Bob Cools and Mrs Leona Detiege, old mayors under whose "reign" lots of these old warehouses have been demolished...
Secondly You have the new port which is North of the town center and spreads out until the Belgo-Dutch border. Here You can find one of the biggest petrochemical clusters in the world and see all kinds of massive logistics operations like railroad terminals, locks,... and a lot of big chemical operations with a lot of lights (and also the flares) during the night. A tour around the new harbour is easily 80 km long. Even easy to by bike as there are new bicycle paths to allow people to cycle to work. Depending on the wind direction it can be smelly... but for a one off it is do-able.
You can also visit Lillo Fort which is a part of an old "polder" village which has survived the port expansions... Less luckily were Wilmarsdonk and Oorderen whose churches are now amidst the stacks of containers (not so funny actually).
In summer You can take the ferry from Lillo Fort to Doel which is half a ghost-town due to the fact that a new dock is planned through the village... This is a case which is pending for too long and shows the indecisiveness of Belgian government towards both industry and civilians. So not a funny story at all, but certainly worth a visit.
Net... a visit to the port of antwerp is interesting. It shows what kind of industrial progress we as humans are capable of. But it shows also how fragile co-existence between industry, agriculture and residential areas can be in a densely populated area like Western Europe.

Actually was at this location last year when visited as a stop on the A.Rosa Cruise lines. BUT not informed about the harbor and its quit unique aspects. English iPads were available for commentary. AS well, snacks were available. Around 90 minutes of history. Enjoyed and would definitely go back.

We took this walk to see the port and river. The views were breathtaking. We could see all of Antwerp in one panoramic view. The walk is level and easy to do. Our 80 year old Aunt had no trouble walking the distance. At the end are some nice restaurants. Have a nice beer and relax.
