Walking Audio Tour of the Historical Heart of The Hague

On this self-guided GPS audio tour you'll see the beautiful old city centre, where kings reign and some of the world's most famous art is displayed. We'll begin our journey at the Mauritshuis and find out how The Hague grew from a small settlement to the centre of political power in the Netherlands, and end the tour with a stroll along the country's most famous avenue.

Along the way, we'll stop by a square that was the site of many executions, a notorious former prison, and I'll point out the best fish-shack in town. The Hague forms a rich part of the Netherlands' history and the characters that people it. Join me to uncover some of these people and their stories.

The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

We visited the Zuiderstrandtheater in december for the beautiful performance of Alice in Wonderland by the Dutch Don’t Dance division. Tickets to the theatre include wardrobe, a drink before the preformance and another drink during the break. There’s a big parking lot in front of the theatre. You can park for €5,00 per day. The theatre is located at wlaking distance to a nice strip of restaurants where youn can eat adjacent to the harbour with a lot of recreational boats. It’s definitely worth visiting!

This may say something to you, I was counting the number of musicians ( 69 ) and the choir members (100 ). The stage was filled. Opera singers ( 4 ) What made this truly unique to me in all my theatre history, are two things. First, it’s location next to the beach and sea, where you can walk down and check out the surf, blown out this evening, or walk over to the gigantic commercial harbor and watch ocean vessels load cargo. Two and Three, the number of audience members who arrived by bicycles and that wine ( alcohol ) as well as pastries were served at intermission as part of your ticket. All three of these would be unheard of in Southern California. The program which I had not before heard, was good, seen better, seen worse. The theater design it self does not have a center aisle. Meaning each of the 29 or so rows, numbered 1 to 73, need to enter from the sides. That is a lot of people to get by if you are a latecomer, we were not, but experienced a few who were.

For a Valentine-arrangement we went to a concert with serveral groups of chorus about the theme of Salty Kisses ('Zlite Zoenen') Located in the dunes of Scheveningen, wide open spaces, fishingboats next door. Good bar and coffee. Friendly staff. Tickets were not sold out, so it was not to crowded. We enjoyed the show and the accomodation. Not sure whether a meal was available in the theatre. More just a snack. not really a restaurant inside the building.
