Built in the 13th century, this is a very pretty building with a nice lake called Hofvijver at the back. The building is used for government type offices. It is one of the oldest parliament buildings in the world.

It is a remarkable blast to the past in terms of architecture as well as culture. Ridder...Stands for Knights and thus the House of the order of Knights. It is a learning experience as well as a repository of your best memories and then some. If visiting anywhere near The Hague, try and make it a point to stop, see, enjoy, learn and keep. Above all, ENJOY !!

I visited the Binnenhof & Ridderzaal as part of the ProDemo English speaking tour. The Binnenhof is the complex of buildings used by the government of Netherlands. The entire Binnenhof complex isn't actually that big and very easily walkable. The courtyard has a wonderful fountain, the Fontein Graaf Willem II. The ceremonial Ridderzaal dates from the 13th century and all the restoration work is very sympathetic to the original design. Here you can also see the chair used by the King and Queen of Netherlands.

The House of Senate is the standout building of Binnenhof with it's many fine paintings and murals. You can even see the understated offices of the Prime Minister of Netherlands.

Amazing to see the inner workings of the Dutch government and place where governing happens.

The square is beautiful and peaceful. I very much wanted to see the Ridderzaal (Hall of Knights). We went on the organized tour for 5 euros. We were told when we booked that the tour is in Dutch but that we would have an audio guide in English. We are experienced users of English audio guides. The reality is that the entire tour is in Dutch with only a small portion of the tour supported by the English audio guide. The film that sets up the tour of the Ridderzaal is in Dutch with "surround sound." We adjusted the volume on our English audio guide as high as possible but were unable to distinguish any English words. It was simply being bombarded with noise.

There are many sights in Amsterdam and The Hague that do an excellent job of accommodating foreign visitors. This is not one of them.

You have to tour this if in Den Haag. It’s the heart of Den Haag. Lots of history. I had trouble finding how to tour it as there isn’t an entrance where you pay. You go to the building across the street where you sign up for the tour or ask at Tourist information which is located in the library a few doors down.

The Binnenhof is in a dominant location next to Hofvijer Lake in the centre of The Hague and is home to the States General, the Ministry of General Affairs and the office of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands. Some of the buildings within the complex date back to the 13th century. The whole courtyard is steeped in history and and is extremely atmospheric. Within the complex of the Inner is the Ridderzaal, hall of the Knights where it is possible to see more on a guided tour but we did not get a chance to do this. Opposite Ridderzaal is an intricate fountain dedicated to William II. The Inner Courtyard is stunning with incredible architecture and is totally captivating.

Luckily we were in a small English speaking group on the 3.30 tour. Head sets were provided if the Tour had been in Dutch. We had an excellent, well informed guide. The visit concluded in the ultra modern parliament building where we sat in on a debate. Do remember your locker number and the pin number you used when you stored your personal belongings. Pens and cards are provided for this.

The tour available here is literally a walk through history. Although the tour guide only gives commentary in Dutch, they have an easy to use English audio version of the story. I love that the Dutch use these historic sites to this day. The wood ceiling in the knights hall is massive timbers with ornate faces carved at the joints. The stained glass windows with the family crests on them are colorful and beautiful. Being allowed to walk through a castle built in 1260 really brings the longevity of these stone and brick palaces into focus. The tour was unique in that while you start in the oldest parts of the castle, you end the tour sitting in the seats of the modern day parliamentarians. When you enter into the parliamentary portion, be prepared for an airport type security screening where they allow you to bring your water bottle through. Gotta appreciate their concern for today's security risks.
