Art from 1983, a 182 meters long sculpture (artist: Auke de Vries) made of steel and polyester dangling along the riverbank in the Northern corner between new Willemsbridge and an old Willemsbridge pillar.
I remember it caused a lot of consternation among locals mainly because of the cost and because people did not recognize its value as an object of art. Why should we pay taxes for this? Perhaps adequately they called it "waslijn" (laundry line). As usual the city authorities ignored the protests. Thus contributing to the rise of Leefbaar Rotterdam, the right wing party now in charge in the city.
I find the sculpture a typical post-war creation reflecting the spirit of building a new city. Building attributes like the steel circle, pipe and blocks kept together in an almost acrobatic way in a flow along the river.

What can I say about an artworks? The artist has his own imagination about things. I don't know what he wants to tell us about this Maasbeeld. First I didn't see it as it's dark stranied lijns above the water. I noticed it when I was on the other side of the river. It's a bit different, though.
