We could not work out what on earth this object was when we first came across it. We finally decided that it must be Santa Claus or something of that nature, but the "thing" in his hands was a bit harder to explain away.... The artist himself says it is a Christmas tree, but then again he also says it can be a "buttplug" as well, or whatever people want it to be! In fact he got the very idea of constructing this sculptural image after observing the two images of a "buttplug" he had once received as a gift, as a joke, which was standing next to a small leprechaun at his desk for years. The two objects, in time, morphed into what he eventually created! "And there was art - an abstract form that meets the trivial and everyday". He says "For me the sculpture is also about the consumer community, as a commentary on material consumption in the western world." And there's your answer!

I wouldn't really try to find this statue, but if you pass by it, it might be worth to check it out more closely. It's not everyday you get see Santa Claus holding a butt plug.

What might be the reason for Dutchmen to put a scary sculpture of a dwarf with anal dildo into the center of Rotterdam? No idea, maybe to impress tourists? If so, the goal accomplished. Yet it is not a nice impression.

I adore bizarre statues! It’s always a highlight of my travels when I find an statue you wouldn’t see elsewhere.
And this one took the cake!
We specially went to this area to see this statue and it did it disappoint.
I shared it with all of my friends with the title “you’ve never seen this before” and it was a hit!

Rotterdam is a fantastic city, I have been there twice and prefer it to Amsterdam. It has great public transport & you can buy a card to use any of it . Visit the Market Hall (Matkthal), it is amazing. It is close to the famous Cube houses, and many other great places. Everywhere you look there is great architecture and waterways. Don't get me started on the beers, delicious (Chocolate ale 10.5° proof).

Yeah, it's what you think it is. Maybe it's not Santa holding a... never mind. Just tell the kids that Santa (or a gnome) is holding a Christmas tree.

What a strange thing to see....apparantly the artist had a distorted idea of what a ice cream look like.

This "Santa Claus" statue is well worth visiting for the photo op. It really makes you scratch your head. This Santa is holding a Christmas tree that looks more like an item one might purchase in a select shop in Amsterdam. What the artist was thinking, I'm not sure, but stop by and get your pictures to share with friends. I'm guessing you won't put it on your holiday card. The statue is surprising large, and it's very easy to find (at the end of a large shopping street).

It is a really ugly statue, but it actually doesn't fit that bad in the surroundings. Rotterdam is such a diverse and 'random' town, so you won't feel it is spoiling the landscape.

a gnome with a xmas tree like buttplug is a comment by artist Mcarthy about the society of consumpption. At first the city council did not want this statue in the public space, so it stayed in the court of the museum Boymans van Beuningen...the shopowners asked later that this statue to be placed in the neighbourhood of their shops, so it arrived at its current place.
