These are the old seamen's quarters of the city and certainly not only for the seamen, which have already disappeared from this part of the city for decennia. The area is changing into a lively neighboorhoud with modern appartments going hand in hand with old pubs, restaurants, theaters. Very nice indeed!

Katendrecht is where the former red light district of Rotterdam was. It has now been transformed in a area with many little restaurants and where many hipsters and young folks like to live.

katendrecht is a small old district close to hotel new york and easy to reach over a small bridge. at the deliplein you'll find a lot of fine restaurants with different cuisines : dutch, thai, meat, etc. an old district comes alive after 30 years. go and discover a 'new' part of rotterdam.

The first destruction of the village of Katendrecht took place around 1900 when the church, 700 houses and farms were demolished to make way for the new port basins (Maashaven and Rijnhaven). The second wave of destruction euphemistically called renovation happened just of few decades ago. It was initiated by real estate developers seeking easy profits and sold by social democrat politicians. The whole area where the Chinese used to live and where the famous red light area was located, was 'modernized' and replaced by upmarket apartments. A similar attempt was made in Amsterdam against de Wallen (prostitution area) and Chinatown, but only partially successful. Traditionally civil authorities in Rotterdam face less opposition and are used to do whatever they want.
Nowadays gentrified Katendrecht is marketed as a place for foodies, where young urban professionals live and the arts and tourism flourish.

I prefer the Katendrecht of the 1970s called De Kaap by the people of Rotterdam with its Chinatown and red light area, where lower income people could still find a place to live.

Katendrecht is cool! Untill a few years ago it was a big mess, a desolated place, but now is sparkling, with FoodHalls, some cosy restaurants, a bridge to Hotel New York, on the other side of the water. It's nice to walk around, take some views over the water and watch the impressive skyline, which is still unfinished. Katendrecht has got some fine place for drinks and suprising shops. So, when visiting Rotterdam, don't miss this area!

Excellent lively hipster atmosphere in this area with renovated apartments, many good restaurants, as well as an old harbour warehouse transformed into a shared dining experience (restaurants share the tables at the inner courtyard where you can dine privately). Only a decade ago this was a red light district ...

Not the first thing I would do in Rotterdam, but definitely a very interesting place. Once (actually very recently) a red light district, plagued with crime and prostitution, Katendrecht is now a very lively, hip neighborhood of Rotterdam.

The area itself is still industrial and not the most pleasant-looking, but it's a must for food lovers (definitely check out the Fenix Food Factory) and stylish, hipster café enthusiasts. There is also a pinball museum here and with further development, it could turn into an even greater place.

katendrecht was once famous as Rotterdam's red light district. But that era is long gone. This part of Rotterdam is quickly gaining a popularity due to a unique collection of (small) restaurant. Food on offer includes Thai (Deli Bird), seafood (Matroos en het meisje), meat (De Baas van het vlees) and various others. Plenty to choose from in a nice part of Rotterdam

It is a kind of island at the south part of Rotterdam. Once it was a neighbourhood with a bad reputation. The chinatown and the biggest chinese community was once here. It's now different. A lot of new buildings, a very nice square, Deliplein with so many cafes, restaurant, shops and other activies. And a special pint Ball Museum is also located on this island. We visited Katendrecht for a live music and also having dinner at Deliplein

Kstendrecht used to be the red light district for Rotterdam, close to the ports on the left bank of the river. Now it is turning into a nice neighbourhood with stylish apartments, nice dining (Bley, Kwiezien, CEO, Fenix Food Factory) and evening entertainment (Walhalla, Las Vegas). Katendrecht is worth the visit, also to make a nice skyline picture of The Kop van Zuid en the Hotel New York.
