When the factory director Albertus Sonneveld moved into the new house he commissioned in 1933, the family left behind all their household supplies. It was fully established in the tradition of New Living, a style that began at the beginning of the 20th century. It reached its peak between the World Wars. The Haus Sonneveld museum impressively documents how the upper middle class adapted the avant-garde. The house is part of Rotterdam Museum Park. Tickets are available on the (somewhat confusing) website of the Nieuwe Institute, or in the museum itself. A very well made audio guide (also in German) facilitates the discovery of this fascinating building, and the lives of its inhabitants. Ambience: 5 stars Value for money: 5 stars Visitor guidance / usability: 5 stars Museum didactics / digital knowledge transfer: 5 stars Recommended length of visit: 60 to 75 minutes Revisit factor: 5 stars

Highly recommended is this. This beautiful house/villa still stands proudly for the ideals of the bauhaus group (those who followed the ideas of architect walter Gropius at the beginning of the 20th century). They wanted to make art and design available to everyone. In Huis Sonneveld you go back more than 90 years and see how a small group could at least afford this luxury.

The Sonneveld house was built in 1933 for a family of industrialists of 4 people and their household staff, 2 or 4 people. The house was built according to the principles of Dutch modernism. It is a technical tour de force. It has been restored beautifully, the heir has been much involved in this restoration. It is visited furnished with the original furniture. Take the time to watch the 25-minute film that explains the steps of the restoration and makes the visit even more exciting. It takes an hour and a half to visit. The ticket combined with the Chabot Museum is interesting because you can admire another construction from the same period

This museum house is highly recommended to visit. Built in the 1930s for a director of the Van Nelle Factory. At that time this was a very modern villa. Very functional design. Museum card is valid. Good tour with audio guide.

Probably the best arts experience Rotterdam has to offer, the house takes you back to the mid 30s and explores the experience of those who lived there. An example of Dutch Functionalism, it is of interest to anyone with a passing interest in architecture and design - especially those who are interested in tidy, minimal spaces.
The whole house is available to view, and you’re allowed to sit on some of the chairs as well. You’re directed through the building via an audio tour operated through scanning a handheld device at numbered check points.
My only criticism of this experience is that it doesn’t explore what average Rotterdam’ers felt towards what was an incredibly alien space in the middle of what was at the time (prior to the damage caused by WW2) a very old city.

Visiting this house was our absolute favorite attraction i Rotterdam. If you have just a remote interest in design and interior decoration this is a must see! We didn't know what to expect, but the house blew us away. The audio guide worked perfectly and took you through the history of the house, the ideas behind the design and al the little details that you would have missed without the guide. Everything here is so thought out and has its special place in the house. The short film about the restoration of the house is also worth seeing.

The Sonneveld House is the former private villa of a factory director from Rotterdam. It was built in the early 1930ies and represents the so called Dutch Fuctionalism.
It was the Interbellum, people who could afford it were striving for a modern lifestyle, away from the old and dark houses they used to live in.
Mr. Sonneveld asked the architects to design a house with lots of light and a focus on functionality and easy care.
As you follow the audio tour through the house, you visit every room and listen to the stories about the family that lived there.
It's a bit like stepping into a time machine.
I really enjoyed the visit.

An interesting insight into pre WWII design influenced by American taste. Beautifully restored and maintained.

This is NOT free as suggested on Trip Advisor. We were charged €14 each that included a visit to a local museum which when we entered had a cover charge of €7 each. It was not possible to visit the Huis without this fee and the included museum is on interest to antennae enthusiasts...

I'm completely puzzled by the fact that the Sonneveld House is not a more popular attraction of Rotterdam. It only costs 10 euros (and a bit less for students and retired and free for -18) to visit both the house and the Nieuwe Instituut and what you get is worth so much more! The building itself is amazing and a true symbol of an architectural style, the condition in which the house and the furniture are is great, and the audioguide is very informative and well-organized.

Huis Sonneveld was built in the 1930s in the Nieuwe Bouwen (Dutch functionalism) style and was the home of one of the leading businessmen of Rotterdam. It is regarded as one of the most representative and well-maintained Nieuwe Bouwen buildings and a visit will tell you why.

All the furniture is in its place and it's amazing to see how the upper class of that time lived and what modern amenities they had in their homes. The house has a very special architecture, with very interesting rooms with a lot of lighting. The audioguide will take you through all the rooms and explain a lot of interesting things about the building, the architect, the architectural style, the family that lived there, the furniture and many more.

At the end of the tour, there is a movie about the restoration of the house that is really worth watching. In total, if you want to listen to all of the audio commentaries and watch the movie, plan 1.5 hours or so here. However, you can also do it under 1 hour and still see the most important things.

Overall, this was a huge surprise and I would really recommend architecture enthusiasts, but also other people, to visit House Sonneveld.

This was the second time that I visited the Sonneveld Huis and I am very happy to have had the opportunity. I love the house and am still fascinated by the modern style coming from the 1930ies. Especially the living room, aaah, I would move in at onve. I recommend to take the audio guide, then you can walk through the house listening to the explanations and you get some infos about the family. There's also a room with a TV now showing a movie about the renovation process. You get something for covering the shoes and there are small lockers for your belongings. It's a three storey house so you need to be able to climb the stairs.

We visited this house after we had been to the Nieuw Museum.
We were greeted by a very nice man who explained we needed to wear overshoes to protect the house. We were given the free audio tours and as you walk around the building there are numbers that you enter into the machine and you get a description of what you see. The person who designed this house was so far ahead of building practices at the time. This is a steel framed building which allowed for massive windows. A private telephone system around the house as well as external lines. Multi-headed showers in the 1930's. This should be high on the list of places to visit.

The Sonneveld house was built and decorated with only one thing in mind: mind the future. Built in de early 1930s, the house provides a fascinating insight in the state of affairs back then and both the permanent and perishable nature of views on the future. Very much recommended and make sure to to the (free) audiotour!
