I went on my own and was hoping to find some history on the ships that my ancestors took in the 50s but came away very disappointed. It's a dream for kids but forgot about adults with a genuine interest in the Dutch phenomenon of conquering the seas.

On arrival on my own I told the front desk I had limited time so what was 'unmissable' in their eyes. They said without a doubt the oil rig experience. I headed over and was put out to see the next one was in 10mins so I looked at other things and came back. We lead into a 'safety briefing room' and we're locked in while they recreated new recruits safety on the rig, and we registered for employee cards. It was a one way system and when I realised the entire thing was based on answering quizzes I rushed through to leave which still took 5mins due to the 'deep see plunge lift' etc. Once out I was pretty much out of time.

Great for kids, not for adults.

This museum is sterile and nowhere you feel loving care. There is no story. What stood out was that this museum had also jumped on the virtue-signalling bandwagon. Coincidentally, we encountered a museum worker in the elevator, on his way to the upper floor, where, I assume, the museum store room is situated. He confided in me, that the best exhibits were stored there. Rotterdam, as the largest harbour in Europe and with a overwhelming maritime history deserves a better museum where you can feel the history of Rotterdam, built around its harbour.

The Maritime Museum in Rotterdam was founded as early as 1874, and are now in a modern building designed by Wim Quist. A lot of its exhibits are in the open-air harbour of the museum along the Leuvehaven. The big red cast iron harbourlight outside comes originally from Hoek van Holland. The famous sculpture by Zadkine. Destroyed City, is located straight outside the museum on the Plein 1940 - referring to the bombing of the centre of Rotterdam by the Germans.

Popped into the museum on our last day in Rotterdam. I was with my 78 year old mum. To be honest we weren’t expecting much - but what a great place to visit!
Once you have paid admission €14 per person you are invited to a ‘safety briefing’. I admit I was a bit confused but we soon caught on that the experience was around the off shore oil industry. The way this experience is presented is innovative and very enjoyable with lots of interactive games which put over the information in a genuinely enjoyable way. There were children in our group and they were all enjoying playing the skull games.
After the off shore experience the rest of the museum is also very interesting informing of the history of Rotterdam and Dutch East India Company and the development of containerisation.
There is an upper floor for children with more interactive displays.
We stopped for coffee in the cafe - which was really great (service in Rotterdam is very good everywhere). The food looked fresh and tasty.
Outside there are lots of boats, some that you can visit, and displays on the history of sea/canal trade.
Well worth a visit

The museum is a far cry from what it used to be, 16 euro entry fee just to find out the models are all gone, a few are stacked in stupid racks, barely visible, the rest of the museum is more like a kids playground instead of telling the history of the port, not one explanation about the passenger trades of Holland Amerika Lijn or the current and past ferries, nothing about the construction of the new waterway, nothing about the sea defences, nothing about the lighthouse system, fishermen, bridges, world war 2 or anything, just some crappy mockup of some oil pipes to resemble the inside of an oil rig, some old containers to explain customs and that's it. WASTE of money!

Diverted to Rotterdam on a storm hit Cruise so took opportunity to visit the Maritime Museum

Great value at €14 each which included all the usual museum type things but also a very interesting Oil Rig Offshore experience which was clever and great fun

My husband and I so enjoyed this museum. It was well laid out and beautifully staged. The exhibits were described in Dutch and English and were extensive. They had a marvelous floor for children and their adults which we also enjoyed.

An excellent place to visit for everyone. A large play space for all children is a welcomed surprise for all parents. Lots to view and will take at least 2hrs to view.

We didn't buy a ticket as it was closed, but the outdoor area is huge and very interesting.

Plenty of signage in English and Dutch telling the story of the old vessels of all types - tugs, barges, cranes, you name it. Great variety.

Rotterdam's Maritime Museum is a high-quality experience. Situated on the busy waterfront, you enter the galleries by way of a wide ship's gangway, flanked by the side of a massive red ship, complete with markings.
Galleries have attractively- presented and fascinating displays of artefacts, maps, models and videos.
Children have been specifically catered for and there is even an entire floor devoted to their play with a giant map on the floor and activities to get them playing!
Outside, there is a small lighthouse which you can climb, and moored boats to inspect. Highly interactive and fun.
And we didn't even have kids with us!
