The Kop van Zuid is a superbly gentrified former docklands area very much in the center of Rotterdam- can be reached by foot easily via the iconic Erasmus bridge. The centerpiece is no doubt the monumental Holland America Lijn building, now hotel New York. It is surrounded by stunning highrise architecture such as De Rotterdam and the Montevideo buildings. A very nice and arty city park (featuring eg. the fabulous Lost Luggage Depot artwork) sits at the western waterfront. A must see in Rotterdam!

The Kop van Zuid is the location of the New York Hotel, which used to be the Holland America Lines shipping office. It is a lovely old building which sits at the end of the Kop van Zuid and is a water taxi stop. For 3.60 euros pp you can travel by water taxi from the inntel hotels at Leuvehaven to the Kop van Zuid and get another perspective of the city and a part of its inner city harbour.

Ships used to dock in this area for almost a hundred years. Now the port has moved towards the Northsea and the abandoned space has been 'redeveloped'. Riek Bakker the chief urban planner of the 1980s envisioned a new modern urban area that would foster the unity of the North and South part of Rotterdam.

However, most people living on the South bank of the river (including me) regard it as an extension of the city centre. Skyscrapers with offices and upmarket apartments, a theatre (Luxor), courtbuilding, the buildings of the Port and Tax Authorities and Ernst&Young occupying the Maastower represent the rulers of a new world dominated by bankers and lawyers.

Still for the average citizen there is plenty of interest: the former Holland America Line building now hotel New York with a good view over the river and Erasmusbridge, youngsters who 'redeveloped' some of the old port buildings (e.g. the food factory), the photo museum, to name just a few. Follow the river bank for a walk to Katendrecht or cycle along the North side of Wilhelminapier to Noordereiland.

Nice to see, all those big buildings, all the boats and water-taxi's and you can eat and drink on the terrace.

London has its Docklands with Canary Wharf and Rotterdam has its "Kop van Zuid". Although it seems a bit arrogant to compare Rotterdam with London, both areas, Docklands and "Kop van Zuid", are city redevelopments on abandoned and derelict harbour areas. Conceived almost 30 years ago with as biggest advocate ms. Riek Bakker, then director of Rotterdam city development, it has resulted in a complete new district on the south bank of the river Meuse with skyscrapers, hotels, houses, shops, the Rotterdam court of law, a theater (Luxor) and to top it off the magnificent Erasmus Bridge. I must add, that some heritage buildings, like warehouses, the cruise terminal and the former offices of the "Holland Amerika Lijn" (now Hotel New York) were retained to blend in with the new buildings.

Get to: metro Wilhelminaplein or walk Erasmusbrug. You will have to walk at least 15 minutes to get to the very end of Wilheminapier, Hotel New York.

No worries it's a safe place to go to. It's just a little southward from the city just across the river.

Other than the pier there not much to see or do. It translate to the Head of South, pass it and you enter Rotterdam South. The pier has several good restaurants. Try Ono. Also a cinema and theatre, and the cruiseship boarding area.

A gentrification phenomenon is giving a new blow to the neigborhood of Kop van Zuid, at the other side of the Erasmus Brug. Some cultural initiatives are launched to renew the landscape of this part of the city, often left out by tourists because of the main focus on the north part of the city. Discovering this part of Rotterdam is definitely worth it, for the ones that want to see other things than museums and discover abandonned factories reconverted in art centres, massive silos that became conference spaces, etc.

The kop van zuid is a peninsula in the heart of Rotterdam with some of the main architectural structures of Rotterdam.

There is the old hotel New York, some old warehouses in the center and these are surrounded by some of the tallest structures of Rotterdam (and the Netherlands) such as the New Orleans, the Maastoren, the Montevideo, the Worldport center and the Rotterdam by Rem Koolhaas (maybe not the tallest, but surely the most impressive building on this list).
There is still construction going on and other project are being planned to make it even more a place to visit. To connect this part to the real center of town they have built the Erasmus bridge which is another special structure.

For those that are still not convinced that this is a must when visitting Rotterdam I'd like to add that it has some nice restaurants and some great views on the river nieuwe Maas!.
