This tunnel is very beautiful - especially the old wooden escalators and the entrance area. The tunnel itself is quiet average, but it is a nice stroll through it. If you walk from the Euromast side of the river, you should turn around an go back at the end of the tunnel, because there is nothing worth seeing on the other bank.

The Maastunnel in Rotterdam, with its striking ventilation buildings on the North bank and the South bank of the river Meuse, is since some years a National Monument. This means that it isn't allowed to do anything diverging from the original design. Meanwhile, the Maastunnel is part of the most important traffic artery between the North part and the South part of the city. This artery runs from the Statenweg in the North to the Zuidplein in the south and vice versa. Building the Maastunnel started in 1937 and was finished, despite the Nazi occupation, in 1942. But on this 75th year, the Maastunnel needs massive maintenance works, also in order to comply with European directives. As this National Monument has to stay within the narrow bounds of the design, even to the colour of the tiles on the tunnel sides, it was decided to close the tunnel for two years from North to South. Luckily, to get support from the Rotterdam community for this radical decision, all kind of popular initiatives were developed. One of these initiatives was a tour of the South ventilation building; part of this tour is a descent into the concrete caves under the building (Beware, steep stairs) to get a "backstage" view of the Maastunnel. Together with the interesting narratives of the guide about the history of the Maastunnel, this makes an interesting 90 minutes. The South ventilation building is a bit in the middle of nowhere regarding public transport. The nearest bus stop, 70, is a 12 minutes walk away. Parking the car is free, but in this residential area you probably have to drive around the block to find a space. Signing up for the tour is by e-mail.

The Maas tunnel in Antwerp(en) was constructed some 75 years ago and although it is only used by cyclists and pedestrians now, still has the lifts originally used by cars.
Usage is free and the old wooden escalators have photos either side showing construction and events around the tunnel.
If you do traverse the entire length, the other side is 'ok' but just residential with some park space, so we would suggest descending in to tunnel appreciating the tunnel and ascending again.

For Valentine Day the tunnel for people walking had a complete makeover into Tunnel of Love. The entire 500 m were covered with pink hearts and blacklight throughout the tunnel gave it all a magical atmosphere. Many people enjoyed this and took a stroll to the other and then back again....

The oldest north-south connection in Rotterdam still proves to be crucial. Two years of renovation caused major trafic jams. Tourists should try the pedestrian tunnel, nice views on either side of the river.

Its free, and it was, when opened, the longest foot tunnel in Holland. Ride and bike rather than walk as it is fantastic to ride in under the river and going where millions of dutch workers have gone before commuting to work.
I loved the photos showing travelers of old as well as the echo in the tunnel.
You can use this a route when you ride by bike around Rotterdam - we went through it after riding around Katendrech and Maashaven

On the way from north to south on the bike again made the choice to go through the Maastunnel. Even if you’ve been there before, it’s always a bit special (even as a Rotterdammer).
