Beautiful and ties into American History

As a descendant of an American Pilgrim, this was a must stop and see destination. Such history to just walk around and read.

We visited because of the church's association with the Pilgrims who went to America. We paid only 3 euros a person for a self-guided tour on a quiet Thursday. The lack of stained-glass windows, we discovered, was due to a gunpowder explosion in 1807. We enjoyed exploring the church and seeing the area commemorating the Pilgrims' history with the church.... Don't be put off by the austere exterior of this building, you'll be astonished by the interior. It's vast and awe inspiring inside. And also worth visiting to find out about Leiden's connection with the founding fathers of America.

Even if you are just making a day trip to Leiden, a visit to Pieterskerk should be on your itinerary. With a history that dates back to the 1200s, the progression of the building from start to completion is emblematic of the challenges of building a grand cathedral. If you are lucky, you'll visit during a time when the organ... More

Not often do you get a chance to visit a structure that was started to be built in the 1100's. This is a self guided tour (your are provided a handbook with information). Impressive views inside and even more impressive pipe organs. There is a small section devoted to the pilgrims that were related to this church before they sailed... More

A beautiful, spare, and important church, there is much to see and notice in the building (which is no longer a consecrated church, but rather used for all sorts of other events, including housing a cafe and an apartment you can rent). There is a memorial to Joseph Robinson, who led the Pilgrims during their stay in Leiden; there is... More

This is an enormous church which cost 3 euro pp to enter (not covered by Museumkaart) which included a self-guided map of the church. We found the laminated instructions confusing and could not find some of the interesting key areas of the church even though the guide was in English. The church layout didn't seem to coincide with the map... More

The Saint Paint's church is the size of a cathedral and recently restored. Amazing to see, worth a visit! Make sure you visit the shop as well and bring a camera along when you're there!

This is a gorgeous church in the heart of Leiden, with magnificent chandeliers, organs and windows. We really enjoyed the information boards in one corner of the room detailing the church's connections to the pilgrims of the Mayflower. However, the information packet (laminated sheets looped together) was just too big, with too much information to wade through to find relevant... More
