The first mention of this castle dates back to the 12th century. Since the castle is located on an artificial hill (Motte) at the place where two branches of the Rhine converge. Apparently, there was a customs post at which a tax was levied for passage along the Rhine. The castle had the usual history: wars, sieges, assaults. However, the castle was ruined by the rapid growth of Leiden, as a result of which it found itself inside a dense urban development. Visiting the castle is free, because there is not much to see here. There's not too much left... The only entertainment in the castle is to walk along the wall. However, the Church on the Mount (St. Pancras) is perfectly visible from the hill, better than up close. And, of course, the Lion over the gate (1662) by the sculptor Rombaut Ferhulst.

It is one of the oldest and best preserved motte castles in our country. It originates around the year 1000. The castle is well preserved and consists of a round stone wall. And is free of charge. Nice to visit. A short visit is enough.

The climb was either straight up the stars or around the spiral. Fairly steep either way. The tower is fairly well preserved. Not much of a view since there are houses up to the foot of the hill. Decent cafe by the entrance

Partially beautiful view
If you are nearby you can walk up but really worth seeing you will not find
Outside still nice with green but
unfortunately, the facility is not particularly vivid, garbage at every corner throughout makes it a very unkempt impression inside

Te castle feels like a quintessence of tight streets of Leiden, not quite easy to find the "entrance"? yet perfect to explore on foot. Given all the greenery around, it can be a cozy place to have a small lunch break.

If you are used to the Italian, French, Austrian, German castle, you will be disappointed of De Burcht. What remain and you can see free of charge is a round fortification with 2 trees in the middle. But, the castle of Leiden is one of the oldest remaining examples of a castle in the Netherlands and this is enough to visit it. The structure is located in the middle of Leiden, where the two arms of the Rhine meet, not far away from the City Hall. There are plenty of sign indicating the major touristic attraction.

The Burcht is fairly central so it is not too much of a diversion to go down a couple of very pretty and historic side-streets to visit it. Also free to enter.
You'll get a few nice photos (we loved the heraldic animals on the entrance gates) but it's sadly lacking in information and interpretation. Still, it's quaint and interesting and if nothing else just come for the lovely views over Leiden.

One of the earliest castles in the Netherlands can be found in Leiden, it is said that the first version was built in the 1300's. The castle itself is built on an artificial hill in the center of town, not far from the river the Rhine (rijn). The castle in it's early days consisted out of a wall in a circle with in the middle a building... Later after the castle lost it's function the building was taken out and only the walls remain.
As a child I played here a lot, as the grounds and the castle are freely accessible and even now whenever i visit Leiden i pass by "de Burcht"!. From the walls you have a nice view of Leiden Center!.
Together with the two remaining city gates, de Morspoort and de Zijlpoort, this gives you some idea of the city defenses during the middle ages.
Children will love it!.

Apparently built on highest ground in Leiden it is tricky to see as you walk through the adjacent streets though. Still worth setting off with a purpose. The entrance is grand and the tower itself well preserved with a nice parapet to walk around
They lock gates so no access at night but a good day time site
Nice restaurant in courtyard at bottom of steps

Stroll down the Leiden town and reach the place. A windy day to reach the top. Having a nice view for Leiden.

Where can I find the opening times and fees?
Can I walk from the central station or do I need public transport?
Written August 6, 2015
It is located right in the middle of the city center, a bit hidden away besides the Public Library.
It is a 15-20 minute walk from the central station.
You can also take a bus to Breestraat (many busses go there): it is a five minute walk from there.
