Very pretty windmill museum. The top floors were what you might expect, being about the practical uses of a windmill. There was also a very informative audio presentation. The ground floor was what made this special as it was the living quarters set up as it was in the 19th century, including a little kitchen!

I just happen upon this by chance, I had a Dutch rail pass and set out from Amsterdam on several day trips ...went to Lieden searching for Plymouth Pilgrim sights (none)! I had this wonderful sight all to myself on morning...the fast spinning blades and creaking, the view...a travel dream....don't miss....also in Holland,go to Delft,Utrecht....all with different ambiance from Amsterdam

Dutch history and geography are inextricably associated with windmills, so anyone interested in these, or in engineering and/or industrial history, should take the opportunity to visit the Valk windmill in Leiden. That is, if one is able to climb steep stairs: information and artifacts are clearly laid out, but getting to them might be difficult or impossible for some. Those who can rise to the challenge, though, will be rewarded not just with information on and an inside view of this icon of regional history, but also with a great view of the city.

I think most people think of windmills when they think of the Netherlands. Traveling around the area, we saw several, but it was fun to be able to go into de Valk (the falcon) and climb each of the seven levels. This is the only remaining windmill of the nineteen in Leiden. Once you get to the top level, there is access to the outside for a great 360 view of Leiden. It was windy but raining yet, so I was able to get a few photos!

This is how you do a living museum! We were fascinated to learn all about windmills (from the little film) and then have the opportunity to explore, clambering up a series of ladders to the platform and then on even higher. At only 4.50 Euros entrance fee it seemed great value. Don't miss it if you're in Leiden - especially if you've never been up a windmill. Beware if you have any mobility issues though: those ladders are steep.

A walk up and down the windmill and a great explanation of the history of the use of windmills in the Netherlands was well worth the small entree fee.

oh my gosh how interesting to go into this windmill museum. it started showing a small apartment. soooooo cute. the quaint little kitchen, the lamp, the livingroom/diningroom.
going up the stairs in another level you see the windmills mechanism and display of model windmills...you have to be very, very, very careful. it is definitely interesting and when going up to the level where you can step outside to an awesome view...CAREFUL! i would not suggest it for small kids or seniors. neither for anyone with leg problems. IT IS STEEP and even worse is WALKING IT ALL DOWN...BACKWARDS. and you are not warned. i guess if they would mention it, they would lose customers. my opinion.
all in all, if you can climb up all the levels...it is worth it!

This mill has been turned into a fun and educational museum. You learn about life as a miller, how mills have developed throughout the ages, and how mills have been a part of Dutch culture. Steep, narrow staircases and heights though, so that must be taken into consideration for your visit. Price was €4.

This windmill stands not far from a train staion. So, it's very difficult to miss it. And, I think, the best way to start your walk in Leiden is to see the town from an open lookout of the mill at high of 14 meters. At once you can see and get impression of old roofs and walls, and sweetest canals, and gorgeuos chirches.
The museum itself is quite interesting with its working mechanisms and beautifully decorated rooms and lof of steps.

Hoe lang zijn mensen er gewoonlijk bezig?
To the Windmill Staff? One day I would love to see it in person since I am a De Valk. And my family owned it before they left for USA in the late 1800's from there. I heard it was made for textile industry they owned? Can you tell me anything else about it? My name is Erin Patricia De Valk(maiden) Eustaquio, daughter of Wesley J. De Valk

The windmill De Valk has always been for grinding flower. The current brick windmill is the third one built in the 1700. the previous windmills in the same location were made of wood.
In the 1700 because of the higher buildings around (the windmill anyway stands just outside of the old city walls and inside the city moat), the windmill was built much taller to be able to catch the wind undisturbed by the surrounding buildings. This is the reason why it had to be made of brick.
I hope this helps.
