THE LONGEST CHURCH OF THE NETHERLANDS The great fire of 1552 destroyed much of the medieval church of Saint John. Shortly after the disaster, the council commissioned the reconstruction of the most startling church of Holland. With 123 meters it is also the longest church in The Netherlands THE 72 STAINED-GLASS WINDOWS ARE WORLD-FAMOUS Entering the Church of St. John, one falls silent at the sight of the majestic space with the 72 world-famous stained-glass windows. That first experience will only get stronger when you see the marvellous light by the 'Dutch Masters' invading the Church. The rich history of Holland can be read in the large windows. It is a beginning of an impressive discovery along biblical and historical scenes of human emotions. Then you understand that the Gouda St. John is one of the highest rated attractions in the Netherlands!

My maternal uncle loved!!! playing the St John's Church organ. The church is located just 'round the corner, from where my paternal grandparents ran their 'local' "pub". My cousins and I played in the narrow 'street' beside the church. My maternal uncle was in his...More

We have visited many churches and cathedrals in numerous countries but have never seen one where all the stained glass windows are illuminated at the same time! A fabulous site. This church has about 50% of the 16th century stained glass found in the Netherlands...More

The church is just huge! It really looks great, even though a bit hard to spot when in front of it. As usual in the Netherlands, you have to pay to enter the church...I hate this, so I didn't pay, that's why I can't say...More

For 6€ entrance you get a great opportunity to enjoy wonderful glass windows as 8 meter high. You receive also a small leaflet with some notes about the windows. The church itself is well repaired, floor is original with carvings of rich men buried underneath.

About 50 amazing stained glass windows including 50% of all 16c stained glass currently in the Netherlands. Each tells a story and the pamphlet received on paying for entry gives a title to each. Nothing much else here so only go if you want to...More

There is a booklet in English explaining all about the wonderful stained glass windows and the construction of the church, the windows are on the UNESCO list, and they were removed during WWII.

This ex-cathedral has been stripped of all Catholic icons; the only area of interest are the very large stained/painted windows. Binoculars would be helpful.

As part of a group, we visited this church (which is not my thing), but still, the stained glass windows were great. This is the longest church in Netherlands. Since it is surrounded by other buildings, one cannot take a picture of the outside and...More

With a typical two-weeks touring Europe, the churches sometimes blend together. Not this one! The stained glass windows are incredible. The audio guide excellently led us through the church. The windows are massive and let in good light for our viewing pleasure. Time well spent.

I'm trying to find the historic/traditional parts of several Dutch cities we'll be visiting. Is this church in a good section to see that part of town? Thank you!
