Arriving at the central plaza (‘Markt’) of Gouda we liked the sight of the gothic town hall with it many turrets and pinnacles. It isn’t all medieval though, there have been many later additions. The double staircase leading to the entrance and the balcony at the rear (a former scaffold!) have been added in the 17th century; the statues representing Burgundian rulers date from the 1950s and the carillon from the 1960s. Together with the red and white shutters it has probably been added for cuteness’ sake. The staircase is decorated with two rather interesting Renaissance atlantes carrying cushions on their head.

Today the town hall is only used for wedding ceremonies and as an event location. To visit the interior, dating mainly from the 17th and 18th century, we had to pay an entrance fee of 2.5 euros and were provided with laminated information sheets for a self-guided tour. But you may spare the money, there is nothing of tourist interest: some paintings, statues, reliefs, coats of arms, mantelpieces, mayoral cushions, portraits of former mayors ... The wedding room, which is still in use, is decorated with antique upholstered chairs and a predominantly green 17th-century tapestry we didn’t like much. It offers a good view on the plaza and the cheese weighing house (‘De Waag’). In former times the balcony doors led to the scaffold outside. A strange place to start married life indeed.

Of course I have special feelings about this building! My parents sat in the chairs there to be married. I attended the ceremony when my aunt was married there. I stood outside 10 years after WWII finished, as a schoolboy with fellow classmates to hear the mayor speak. I love Gouda by Candlelight around the (now former) town hall. There's so much history! I was pleased to take my then teen-age children there (born in Sydney). (We visited much earlier than 2012)

We drove from Kinderdijk along the Lek river and took the ferry for only 2. 45 euro across the river for a short drive to Gouda. A lovely Dutch town with nice shops, St John s Church and the old City Hall . You can visit the Gouda cheese shop which sells the best local cheeses. Walk through the old town with delightful houses on the canals.

Well worth stopping off here if you have a spare hour or so its not all about the stadhuis its just a great wee town to visit.
Went on market day so was good atmosphere, ate and drank for free at the many stalls giving away their wares.
Bit of a walk from the station (20 mins) but lots to look at en route, typical dutch town that makes our uk towns look sad and boring.
Stadhuis is a fantastic piece of architecture but as you walk around here there are many other noteworthy buildings equally as impressive, give gouda a go you wont regret it.

This city-hall is very historic and for most tourist it's something really special. But there are more of these city-halls and it's unused for the reason that the council changed the location since they needed more space. Nice for some pictures and around it there are some places where i loved to go as local (during lunch go to the garden cafe of the central museum or eat out at Angelio Divino)
But not more than that.

With great expectations we went in the famous Gouda City Hall, but we came out disappointed. One can do the building in less then half an hour and one will have forgotten what has been seen in no time. No the church (St. Johns) or the Cheese market are better/more fun

Classic Gothic in nature, the jewel of the market square. The exterior is probably the best part of the building, although inside there are historical exhibits of a local nature. The Stadhuis is situated as the centre piece of the market square with the Waag (Weigh Scale House) behind. Lots of terraces to have lunch and enjoy the view.
