In 1618/1619, Dordrecht, or Dordt as it was referred to in English at the time, was the centre of Europe for six months during the Synod of Dordt, a unique church assembly. An important decision taken in the Synod was to officially order a translation of the Bible into Dutch from the original Aramaic, Hebrew and Greek languages. After years of translation work the first Statenbijbel (States Bible) was printed in 1637.
To honour the fourth centennial of the Synod, the German art collective robotlab programmed a robot that will write out the complete biblical text of the Statenvertaling (States Translation). Just like a monk in a scriptorium who transcribes each individual character, the robot writes in calligraphy over three million letters in real ink on a roll of paper of more than 1000 metres length.
The robot at work is free to be seen in a special small house on the courtyard until June, 2nd 2019.

If you have time for only one museum in Dordrecht then I would recommend this. Wonderful interaction, a funny but also carefully-made film, interesting display in the entire museum focussing not only the history of Dutch independence but also the story of Dordrecht. English brochure is offered at the ticket desk by the friendly staff. The entire atmosphere is friendly and relaxing, and one can really actively join the visit since the very beginning rather than receive a flow of information without feedback. Having studied quite a lot on the independence of the Netherlands, I have to say that the museum offers a 'Holland-centric' narrative, which is quite common in Holland [not in the entire Netherlands], a version easily understandable but may be complemented by other perspectives [not the job for this museum]. However, it is still worth a visit.
During my visit, there is a temporary exhibition about the State Bible of the Dutch Protestant Church. Focussing on the printing history, it shows many copies of this Bible and tries to tell a narrative about the Bible in Dutch. Well-done, but to some extent a bit simple. You may need more information from the temporary exhibition in Dordrechts Museum. Unfortunately, the temporary exhibition is only in Dutch.

Very interesting musuem with a great blend of local and Dutch history.
The place itself was of great importance to the formation of what is now the Netherlands. This is well catalogged and documented.
What is really disappointing is the staff attitude! I believed we had moved on from nazism but not in this place. " You shall do this, you can't do that, etc.".
Example: My mother is a less abled person and relys on her rollator to get around and I assist her to get around.
At one stage we were told by the staff to use the stairs instead of the lift?! Seriously? This people need an attitude check.
Furthermore some area aren't accessible for wheelchairs.
Unfortunately all this has left such a bad taste that can not recommended this place.

A place with a history, and a very attractive place to visit. Right in the heart of old Dordrecht, a walk-through should be a must on each visit to this city

There is a guide in English which is very helpful, as well as a very knowledgeable lady who seemed to be everywhere and gave extra information if needed. There is a lot of going up and down stairs, but happily there is a lift for those of us less able to cope with them. It was rime well spent.

The museum tells about the start of the Netherlands. Dordrecht played an important role there. Also change in the water around Dordrecht is shown and how Dordrecht benefitted from the water.

Absolutely worth visiting with lots of audiovisual items. Perfect introduction to Dutch history. Especially the movie about the first meeting of the Dutch states is a must see!
