Merwestein used to be a private estate, but the municipality of Dordrecht acquired it in 1884. It is a beautiful well maintained city park with old high trees, lots of water and meadows, one of them with fallow deer.

Remarkable is a statue called Tree of Life (Petri, 1952) in the middle of the park honoring the resistance against Nazi occupation and resurgence of the Dutch people after the war.

No cycling allowed in the park. There is a playground for children.
In summer open from 7:00 AM to 15 minutes after sunset.

Interesting about this place is that it started as a private estate to a villa which has been destroyed in WWII. This background explains the old, monumental trees and the botanical diversity of the trees. Without knowing that, it is still a pleasant park for a stroll, or, if you are a tourist, why not buy your lunch in a local supermarket and have it here sitting on the grass?
