The older part of the Delft City Hall, a belfry called Het Oude Steen (The Old Stone) dates back to 1300 and was used as dungeons and torture chamber. The newer part in front of the belfry was built after a fire by the renowned architect Hendrick de Keyser and completed in 1629.

The City Hall is a Renaissance style building and is located on the western side of Markt whilst Nieuwe Kerk is on the eastern side. The red shutters make City Hall very distinctive, this part of the building dates back to around 1618-1620 but the belfry dates back even further. The old city hall burned down in 1618 so a replacement was needed, architect Hendrick de Keyser was already working on the Nieuwe Kerk so he was asked to design the new City Hall. It certainly is an impressive structure in the Old Town that has a wealth of many stunning buildings.

Built around the Belfort tower called Oude Steen (Old Stone, as in 13th century Delft, all other buildings in town used to be made of wood). The old tower is hardly visible if you are close to the hall, but from further away you can see it. Inside the Steen there is the old jail and torture chamber.

City hall dates from 1629 and demonstrates the spirit of the city at the time. Open windows and not just a few, but all around with bright red shutters (just in case). Splendid colorful decorations showing Delft's prosperity during the Dutch Golden Age. 50 years later the decline would set in, but the Renaissance architecture shows no sign of it: only optimism.

City hall is open during working hours. To visit the Steen enquire at the tourist office. Sometimes it is possible by joining a guided tour.

An Amazing Visual of Historic Delft, The old city hall burned in 1618, and since Hendrik de Keyser was working across the Markt at the Nieuwe Kerk, he was asked to design a new one.
Under the tower is an old city prison where the assassin of Willem the Silent, Balthasar Gérard, was kept before sentencing.

Opposite the New Church, across the famous Market Square,is the beautiful Delft City Hall.Exterior is ornate and beautiful, with lovely stonework and windows with red shutters. There are ornate gold decorations and statues. I entered it accidentally thinking it was the Old Church, but its an office area, so am not sure if you visit it inside.

I was surprised to learn that I could enter and visit the Ground Floor area. I took pictures of the old map and other items on display before leaving. The staff were friendly!

On opposite ends of the market square you have nieuwe kerk and the stadhuis. Perfectly Dutch atmosphere overall with cheese and delftware shops on the side. The town halls symbolizes the wealth of old Delft - while still being a far distance from cities like Leuven or Bremen. So nice to look at but not outstanding or deeply memorable.

Used to be a city house. Now this beautiful renaissance building serves as a great place to get married. If there is no wedding ceremony at the moment you can just pop in and have a look at the great piece of architecture.

The first ever microscope is housed here, so worth a peek in on the ground floor for science enthusiasts. You can also see where couples hold their civil marriage ceremonies in Delft.
