We were on a coach trip to Belgium and the Netherlands to see a few Christmas Markets and on our final day when heading back to the ferry at Ijmuiden we stopped off in Delft for a couple of hours.

Its fair to say that there was little for us to do in such a short time other than have a look around and take some photos. This is one of the Hugo de Groot monument in the central market square.

The most remarkable and impossible to miss monument in Delft. Placed on Markt in front of Nieuwe Kerk in 1886. Putting him high up, overlooking all of us, was comforting and put him to his right. Hugo Grotius might be one of the most distinguished law makers, arbitrator and the author of many international laws. The monument symbolizes the greatness of Dutch people throughout the history.

His life and work made him in conflict with many peoples, among them the royal family. He was imprisoned because of his ideals that often sided with equality and diplomatic ways to solve religious and political conflicts that plagued the Dutch society during his time. He was exiled to Paris and was never allowed to come back to Holland and eventually died far away from his hometown in 1645.

The Hugo de Groot Monument was created to honour Hugo Grotius who was a successful law maker and arbitrator who was born in Delft and known for his religious tolerance. He was imprisoned for the principles that he had and was exiled to Paris and died in 1645. The monument is situated in Delft Markt underneath Nieuwe Kerk which was a very popular sight for tourists whenever we were in the vicinity.

Just walking in the Markt Square, between the Nieuwe Kerk and Stadhuis van Delft, we couldn't miss this monument, that was erected in the honor of Hugo Grotius. He was one of the most distinguished law makers and author of many international laws.
In fact, the monument is located in the front of Nieuwe Kerk.
Hugo Grotius was also arbitrary advocate, specializing in the field of the sea laws.
He was a native of Delft, an incredible intellectual during his time in the first half of 17th century. He was very renown personality, holding the lectures in the Leyden University.
Very nice monument, showing Hugo Grotius in the academic institution garment, holding the books between hands.

Hugo de Groot, also known as Hugo Grotius, was an eminent legal author, theorist and philosopher born in 1583 in Delft, Netherlands, who lived until the mid 17th Century. He is widely considered to be a founder of international and maritime law.

The statue which commemorates him is situated in front of the Nieuwe Kerk in the vast main square of Delft. It is a very impressive and imposing structure. Thankfully, when I took the attached photograph, the obligatory pigeon or seagull which normally sits on the heads of statues was for once missing. Possibly it had gone for lunch?

A beautiful statute of a great expert in law. Of interest is the little memorial plate immediately north of the stature, where DSC ("Delftsch Studenten Corps", an important student fraternity) listed the "motto's" they used since 1993 for the celebration of each of their 5-year anniversaries.

The formal statue of Hugo de Groot, or Hugo Grotius, stands in the town square in front of the new church. In a passageway off the street to the right of the church as you are facing it is another display about him. He was known as very intelligent, studied law and wrote about international law and his writings are supposedly still used today in the international court at The Hague. He is also reputed to have written poetry in Latin at the age of four. He was imprisoned at the time of William of Orange, accused of political involvement in the war eith Spain. The display shows his prison cell, nicely furnished with lots of books which were delivered in largge boxes. After several years his wife suggested he leave the hooks there and hide in the hox to escape, so he did and left the country.

If you are in the main square and near the New church you cannot miss it. It is worth reading about the great man either on the statue or from a guide book.

This Statue in the middle of the town square is difficult to ignore. Supposedly the father of all modern legal systems, I have yet to find anyone who is aware of him. The statue is a good meeting point for groups and much of the square can be seen from there. while we were visiting, a traditional clog maker was demonstrating how this footwear was made, using only hand tools.
