About
Come and get to know the unknown site of the province of Zeeland and the soul of its people in the new and magnificent maritime muZEEum in Vlissingen, Holland. The museum is housed in several buildings, dating back to the 16th and 21th century. Modern architecture has blended these buildings in a very special way. From the roof balcony with its unique 17th century watchtower you can enjoy the breathtaking view of the 'Westerschelde'. At the muZEEum you find: - The Lampsins'beautifull 17th century town house - Michiel de Ruyter's adventures - Underwater treasure from sunk East Indiamen - Fascinating maritime games - Stories about Zeeland's illustrious past - Vlissingen's turbulent history - Zeeland's maritime life, then and now.

Important part of the canon of the Netherlands

Very enthusiastic desk officer, explained almost the whole exhibition before even entering. The phone they give you to hear the explanations is very helpful. The museum shows the history of sailing Zeeland and also the recent history of WWII and the ship building company De Schelde and nowadays Damen. Important paintings from the former house owner and of course our Michiel de Ruyter. I learned a lot of new things today.

nice museum of maritime history
Jun 2018 • Couples
An amazing museum loaded with history, not only the collection, but the building itself as well. Because it was the home of the very rich ship owner who employed the world famous sailor (later admiral) Michiel de Ruiter.

Small bet very interesting museum - not just military items
Apr 2017 • Solo
This was my favorite part of my visit to Vlissingen. It is a small museum but items are very well displayed among various floors. The are a lot of recovered artifacts from shipwrecks and sometimes you have to pull out some draws to see them. There are many most amazing model ships. There isn't a large amount of military items which is a nice change for a maritime museum. I had a chance to talk with a gentleman who seemed to be the director of the museum who offered amazing insights to some of the artifacts including a really wonderful painting of the old city done accurately without the benefit of helicopter for the perspective at altitude. There are no gigantic ships but it is in a very historic and original building. The modest entry fee also slows you to visit the defensive area by the water which is limited artifacts but an experience to visit but it will take only 5 or ten minutes. I been to many maritime museums but this one was different in a very good way.

Local view of Dutch Maritime History
Jul 2016 • Family
Set over several floors (lift available for all but look out tower), this was a nice surprise. A mixture of traditional displays and paintings with modern touch screens and interactive exhibits.Staff were friendly and one guy went out of his way to explain as much as he could to us. Watch out for the hidden items in some of the drawers and the view from the watch tower over the marina is very nice. Entrance fee was by credit card only though, which was odd.

Check out the "Control Tower"
Jun 2016 • Couples
A person could spend hours here, literally. We unfortunately didn't have the time to do all of that. One really cool feature that is a must do while in the museum is the observation tower. It looks like huge control tower of some sort. We were told that on a clear day one can see the harbor at Antwerp.
Recommended.
