About
Face to face with a container ship in Het Portaal van Vlaanderen. Come and join the fun in the interactive Visitors Centre] at the heart of the Terneuzen Locks. A trip to Terneuzen Locks starts with a visit to the interactive Information Centre and can be followed by a guided tour or doing a tour by boat. The lock complex forms an essential link between the Westerschelde and the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, one of the busiest canals in Europe. Almost 70,000 ships and boats pass through here annually. Approximately 250 companies are located within the Canal Zone, accounting for 20% of the employment in Zeeland. The port is in a constant state of development and fulfils an important international role, as you will see in our Information Centre.

Sometimes there are really some big ships going through the portaal. But there`s lots of car traffic and now construction ongoing for a new one. So it`s hard to really see what`s happening.

The port of Terneuzen (gateway to busy maritime Ghent) is changing - and how! The 'Portal' is and will be a privileged witness of it all, so please go and visit it.
I must admit that I did not know what to expect (sometimes info on other websites is incomplete and even wrong). This is also because of this major restructuration so all services are moving around. So don't be surprised if the address changes again in the near future. Now it is a bright and modern pavillion-cum-free parking space (a luxury in Ter Nose). The lovely slideshow (from the history of medieval Ghent on!), the small scale model of the future locks and an extremely interesting explanation from Small Giant Guide Henk - heonce w as a shipping agent so he knows a LOT of fascinating details.
Now I was lucky to be there in time for the 1 o'clock presentation, I took the combination of the tour and a boat trip (well worth the 18.50 € price as it is a programme that easily fills the whole afternoon, incl. one free drink in the cafetaria that also serves some snacks). Then followed a comfortable trip by mini train, high up the panoramic tower (47 steps), and a totally unexpected visit of the huge underground space with the counterweights of a big bridge.
The boat trip was also most interesting, lots of local things to see and to know (like the small film of snow white paper fibres that cover the coal heaps, so that the dust does not fly away!
My conclusion is that you haven't really seen the river town of Terneuzen if you haven't seen the port...
Knowing that most of the Portaal action is driven by extremely friendly volunteers, they all do an excellent job!!

If you like all things to do with ships, boats, and nautical stuff in general, then you will enjoy visiting these locks and watch them in action as ships & barges are taken up & down, in & out of the Gent-Terneuzen canal!

educational outing for the whole family or colleagues with technical achtergrond.geweldige guides on how the locks work with a visit to the pump house and a boat trip on the canal.
because we need the level of the canal water be closely monitored partly due the tides and because we have salt water in the Westerschelde and fresh water in the canal.
Normally thousend of cars are driving over the pump house at the locks. It is really great to see and explore how the Locks really are working!!!
