Museum is great for lovers of christian art. You will learn a lot through out the 3 floors. They offer free audio guides in english. Not all of the displayed art has signs in english. When we visited the rooms were really cold so I wouldn't recommend wearing just a tank top. The staff was very very nice.

The museum is really interesting. Rich collection of paintings of reformist Christian artists reflecting the essence of the break with tradition of Catholic Church. Authentic spiritual pictures, treasuries and statues. You begin to understand the ideas behind medieval Dutch artifacts and their meaning to Peale of the times. Recommended for visitors who have already been in traditional sites in Amsterdam

This is The Netherlands' national museum of Christian art, culture and history. It's housed in a medieval monastery, and includes both Protestant and Catholic art and cultural objects. It's not large, but you could spend a lot of time here. Unfortunately, I was under a time constraint, and so although I was able to visit all the rooms, I didn't absorb everything that there was to see.

The Treasury is particularly impressive, with a range of obviously precious items, but all the rooms are of interest. The museum goes to a lot of trouble to present information in English. There's both a booklet and an informative guide, and even a transcript of the text of the “sound cones” that are used in a number of places.

At the time of my visit, there was a temporary exhibition, too, dealing with religion and tolerance.

What spectacular artefacts and relics. BUT for someone who does not speak Dutch, most of the exhibition was lost to me. There was not enough English explanations of what the things were.
So if you only want to know half the history of the religion in the Netherlands, this is the exhibition for you

REMBRANDT AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF DUTCH PAINTERS .... well that sounds good doesn't it! So we devoted this morning to experience masterpieces by Rembrandt. So we paid our 28 EUROS and went in. And down stairs. And upstairs. And through galleries. And .... well, all rather boring unless you have always wanted to see three oxygen cylinders hanging from a wire. So what about the REMBRANDTS you ask.
Exactly! Our same thought!
There is JUST ONE!
Just one early work lacking his prime, mature skills.
The painting depicts a eunuch. Rather a fitting title as this so called REMBRANDT exhibition definitely has NO BALLS!!

An interesting museum that contains religious themed art works and relics largely from the Netherlands. For non-Dutch speakers it is recommended to get the English audioguide (no additional charge) as all information accompanying the exhibits is in Dutch only. There are some interesting works and pieces in the museum and non-religious visitors will gain some interest from a visit.

This is a must museum for all those who love medieval art. The museum is full of very interesting artifacts from the Netherlands, they are well presented and displayed. And the setting is also great, inside an old convent.

Well worth a trip here - some fascinating exhibits and paintings with a good commentary for many items on a complimentary iPod - well worth the 12.50 entry fee. Quiet on a Sunday morning which was a bonus.

I have never visited a museum which tells the story of Christianity in such an effective way. By using art, this museum of art and religious objects outlines the culture and history in the Netherlands. Housed in a monastery, the collection of both Catholic and Protestant art tells how Christianity shaped the Netherlands (although many of the themes are relevant in countries with both strong Catholic and Protestant traditions). I thought the museum tells the story with a very balanced approach to both Catholic and Protestant traditions. While the explanations beside the objects were in Dutch, the material supplied (at the entrance) in English, although not as extensive as that provided for Dutch readers, was sufficient to maintain interest and make it a worthwile tour.

Museum Catharijneconvent shows the history of Christianity in the Netherlands through centuries-old art as well as contemporary art.

Paintings by Rembrandt, Pieter Saenredam and Jan van Scorel, relics, video art by Guido van der Werve and others, sculptures of saints, ancient manuscripts, a huge stained glass window by Marc Mulders and all there is to know about holidays such as Christmas, Easter and St Nicholas. This and more is on display in the Catharijneconvent Museum in a magnificent medieval convent. This oasis of art and culture is located in the centre and in walking distance from the Dom. The Catharijneconvent Museum tells the fascinating story of the past and present of Christianity in the Netherlands. With a collection consisting of Protestant and Catholic art and cultural objects, there is no other museum like this in the entire world.

Open: Tuesday through Sunday.
