i saw some reviews of people who wanted to climb the tower but found a closed door: be aware that you have to buy your tickets beforehand at the VVV (the Dutch tourist office).
Only during summer months there are daily tours to the top of the tower:in July and August every day between 12.00 and 18.00. Outside the summer season there is only one daily tour starting at 14.00.
So yes, you get the added benefit of being far from the maddening crowd of Amsterdam, but this goes with reduced opening hours.
The views from the top are stunning, and you get to climb up much higher than most towers (to the final trans). When we got the tour, we were the only two people and the tour guide switched effortlessly to English (I'm Dutch but my partner isn't). The tour guide times the guide so that you are close to the carillion when it goes to play, so you can hear the bells from very close.

Fun climb up the tower, you learn about the city, the history and the tower itself of course. The view from the top is amazing and gives you an idea how flat the country really is. On a nice, bright day, you have great views.

What a view.....on a clear day you can see all the way to Utrecht and Amsterdam. Amazing views over the old historic town -- especially the church, wall houses, canals and market square.
We were so lucky.....we essentially had a private tour - €5 each -- so the guide spoke English and allowed us to ring the bells. Also shown the nesting PelegrĂn Falcons.....what a treat. You do need to be relatively fit for this climb and not claustrophobic .....the steps get stepper and narrow as you climb higher, and the curving stairs are enough to make you dizzy. Well worth the effort though!

also where the measurements for Netherlands is taken from. Quite a climb up the tower, but worth it. Great little square down below to grab coffee, or drinks afterwards.

After walking around the tour of central Amersfoort we decided to pay for a guided tour of the tower. Our fantastic guide, Jacques, spoke perfect English and gave us a really interesting, hour long tour just for the four of us. An added bonus was that the artist of the paintings on the ground floor came with us and told us other interesting facts, which was great. Our kids (12 and 9) also loved it.

We live in Amersfoort, but didn’t know that we could go up this tower. The tourist office across sells tickets for the tour, the price is very decent €5 per person. The tour is in Dutch, sometimes guides can also speak English. They will show you every level of the tower. Be prepared for narrow stairs, more than 300 of them!

This is a square where lots of pubs and bars, but the best part is watching the sundown at the kerk when having a nice cool beer...

Definitely the best attraction in Amersfoort. The guide on the tour was really friendly and very interesting. Despite not being good with heights I managed it absolutely fine and the views were amazing. This should be on any visitor “must do” list!

The tower is the part remaining of a huge church that was built in the 15th century, after a miracle occurred (Maria appeared here, hence the name of the square and tower/church.. The tower can be climbed. Nearby the point is marked in the square's surface which is, formally, the exact center of the Netherlands. But the real beauty lies in the square itself, and it is most beautiful on Friday morning, when the flower market is held here. Walk through the abundant colours, sit down at one of the many terraces of the pubs around the square and relax.
But don't forget to return later in the day or in the evening, to watch a movie in the intimate movie theater at the square, which shows mostly film-house movies.

Onze-Lieve-Vrouwetoren is a historical tower located in the center of Amersfoort. It has an interesting religious back story which people of faith or history buffs may enjoy. The tour cost around 5 euros per person and is lead by a volunteer tour guide. Because of the volunteer service I believe that the tours are conducted by a reservations meaning that it's not a place where you can just walk to and expect to see. You must make a reservation online. At least this was the case when I visited in the winter. You can view the website for the tower to get more information and to book your tour. The tour itself is about an hour long. You will go up into the tour which can be a bit exerting but nothing too strenuous. There are some interesting antique exhibits inside but the true appeal of the tower is the sights from the outside. You can see a complete 360° view of the city and if you look close enough, you can even see a bit of Amsterdam. The views are quite beautiful but they can be a bit daunting for those who are afraid of heights, especially at the highest stop. Keep in mind that when climbing the tower you will be walking up a flight of stairs so it can get tiring. It's also very narrow and a bit cramped and dark. I'm a pretty tall guy so there were moments, mostly near the highest part of the tower where I felt a bit claustrophobic. The cool thing about the tower is that it's in the city center in the central market place which is nice for having a drink or some lunch or dinner which you could do before or after your tour. I believe the tour operates all year round. Our tour guide was very informative but he didn't speak much English. He did try which I appreciated. So that's another point to keep in mind. It's definitely worth a visit if you are looking for things to do in Amersfoort.
