We did not even consider going to this "unknown" town if it was not for our friend who we accompanied on a pilgrimage to the birthplace of his father. We visited this museum with 2 persons. It is situated in the former City hall plus an ancient building. They give a good review of the city and the history going back to the middle ages. This museum combines unique displays on history, art and the environment. The "water" room on the second floor connects all three of these themes around the history of Kampen as it relates to the IJssel river and the Zuiderzee/IJsselmeer. I really liked the variety that this museum had to offer. From early works of the greats from the 18th Century to work from the 1900's to 1950's to works of modern day artists. This museum is great.

This museum has a unique series of life size paintings of all Royals of the House of Orange on display, including the present Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
