About
In the Zaans Museum & Verkade Experience you will always find something exciting to do. Visit our chocolate and biscuit factory and discover how Verkade biscuits and chocolate were made and admire our magnificent collection of packagings, graphic designs, paintings, photographs, films, Zaans painted furniture and utensils. On a regular base we organize activities for the whole family. Lectures, films, workshops and tasty activities like building cookie-factories using Verkade biscuit, make edible postcards, or get started with real Verkade chocolate!Besides the activity program we offer several investigative routes, you can design a wrapper for a chocolate bar, and of course taste the different Verkade Cookies . With the serious games you can test whether you 're just as agile as a Verkademeisje, or that you still have more talent for baking cookies .With the serious games on the factory square you become an engineer, planner, operator, technician or designer and will be introduced to the variety of technical occupations in the food sector.

Nice but quite confusing. This museum is certainly of added value to our beautiful Zaan region, but it was a lot of searching for everything. It was not clear where we had to show the entrance tickets and it was quite a search for the “correct” route. So a map would have been very nice. Our daughter did the children's treasure hunt and it was not really clear which part of the museum we had to do this in (eventually it turned out that this was only at the Verkade Experience). The chocolate wrapping and cookie wrapping games were a lot of fun and we learned a lot. So it's really nice, but I see a lot of areas for improvement.
Another tip: If you are sensitive to sound/noise, I advise you to bring earplugs because it can be very overstimulating.

Small museum with a pretty high entrance price. First part is going to get you
with an audio tour of the exhibition about the origins of Verkade.
The second part you follow " the girls of Verkade " . Nice to check out the fabriksmachines. Admire the old cookie tins and the short story of the
Tealight to listen to. At the end we were treated to a Verkade cookie.
I had expected to find a wide range of delicious bars of chocolate in the museum shop and maybe even buy the nice old cookie jars.
That was disappointing ....

Without a treasure hunt for the children, there isn't much for them to do.
You would think that there might be some kind of chocolate tasting row or something along those lines... since it is supposed to be a 'Verkade experience'. But none of that is there. Everything must be purchased extra. Scavenger hunt costs €3.50 per child, while you already pay a considerable amount for entrance. The sledgehammer came when paying for parking for 1.5 hours (the children were not entertained for much longer) 15 (!!!) euros. It is not indicated anywhere, but you pay for a day ticket, no matter how long you are there. Absurd. All in all, absolutely not worth the money and I left with a disappointed feeling.

It was disappointing for us. We were expecting to be inside an interactive and curious chocolate museum with cool activities for kids, also with the smell of chocolate in thr air. But it was the opposite. It was an expensive experience for just one room.

Great little museum. Verkade factory superb, kid friendly with great exhibits and free samples of biscuits.
Buy the Zaanse Schans card here before visiting the rest of the area - discounts on food, free entry to some of the other attractions in the traditional dutch village.
If you're visiting Amsterdam you must come here.
Suggest take 391 bus from Amsterdam Centraal - takes you straight to their door in 30mins and runs every 30 mins

It was a nice museum but mainly about the chocolate factory. I was hoping to see history of the Windmills and local houses.

Having walked along the canal bank and enjoyed the windmills we decided to visit the museum and learn a bit more about the area.
The museum is pretty naff. I found it a bit overpriced though. At just under 20 Euros it is around the same price as the big museums in Amsterdam.
For a start, the collection is quite random. There is a huge museum of a cookie and chocolate factory (?!?) in which we got lost trying to find the local history part. The staff member I asked fir directions from was quite rude. I don't say that lightly - I have rhino hide as a rule and am difficult to offend. All the other staff were nice.
The history part (after we found it) was somewhat haphazard. Definitely utilise the free recorded guides on offer. It showcases the string regional price, the history as a major industrial centre; with over 600 working windmills at its height. There are a lot of random collections from locals and a few nice paintings showcasing both the regional history and the area as an inspiration for the impressionist movement.
A slightly overpriced, somewhat overated museum. We actually enjoyed, far, far more, walking by the canal in the beautiful countryside, looking at the windmills.

Hugely disappointing, hard to understand and the factory which should be interesting had a Lucy n Ethel style cracker packaging game that was not working well.

The best thing about this museum is that you learn so much about Dutch main industrial centre & its production over the years through very concise but fun displays.
There is also a Chocolate & biscuit museum included, with lots of games and information presented in a very educational, practical but fun way!
