where in the 17th century Peter 1 stayed incognito for a week (eventually discovered) to learn shipcraft. A wooden house has been preserved, covered with a stone case during the reign of the daughter of Paul 1, Anna Pavlovna, the wife of the prince and then the king of the Netherlands. When approaching the house there is a monument to Peter 1 - a gift from Emperor Nicholas 2 to Zaandam. The street on which the house stands is named CZAAR Peterstraaat, dubbed in Russian as “Tsar Peter Street”. The house itself is small. A little lopsided. Inside there are simple utensils, a shuttered sleeping place, an exhibition telling about the stay of the Tsar and the restoration of the house.

I was amazed at how they encapsulated this old wooden house where Tsar Peter the Great of Russia once stayed to learn shipbuilding techniques to take back to Russia. The museum guide was of Russian decent and was able to provide an endless amount of historical background. What a rich experience.

If you start at De Dam, a square with a statue of the man who was to become Czar Peter the Great and follow the foot prints from the statue along Czaar Peterstraat, turn down what almost looks like a right of way laneway, halfway along the laneway is a purpose build brick structure that houses Peter the Greats House, it looks a bit like a Russian church. Stepping through the door there is a tiny cottage built from ship timbers. The cottage was originally built around 1630 and is one of the oldest wooden buildings in the Netherlands. When Peter came to Holland in 1697 and spent time learning about ship building he stayed in Zaandam for a number of days. In recent years the cottage in which he stayed has been restored to save it from irreparable damage by lifting and stabilizing its foundations that were sinking. The restoration included a wooden frame around the cottage to stop it leaning further than it already does; the new framework has been done very tastefully though without detracting too much from the original cottage. Be aware that if you have vertigo the lean of the walls and unevenness of the floor are likely to exacerbate the problem!! The cottage is just 2 rooms and not very big. It has minimal furniture and decoration, except a few paintings that I would guess are recent additions. About the only thing that spans a fair amount of time is the graffiti, it covers walls, steps and is even scratched into the panes of glass!! Around the walls of the outer building is some history about Peter the Great and his lineage. Behind the outside of the covering building is a small delightful garden with trimmed lawn, garden beds and statuary.
At the time I visited I was the only one person there. The entrance fee is in keeping with the size of the site; E3.00.
I enjoyed my visit, probably because of the diplomatic history that the building represented. Peter visited here when Russia was looking to modernise; this was the same period of time of Holland’s Golden Age. Peter recognised that the Dutch were a seasoned seafaring nation and a progressive society. Since he later went on to build St Petersburg, in which are elements of Holland, I would guess that Czar Peter the Great found this diplomatic visit worthwhile.

When you follow the tourist trail, indicated by the footsteps laid into the pavement, along houses in disrepair, gloomy littered streets, ugly squat modern structures, graffiti and dog poo, suddenly you encounter a nice small structure; this is the museum, containing a substantial part of the original "Czaar Peterhuisje", the wooden structure where Czar Peter the great lived for a short time while learning to be a ships carpenter. I will not repeat the story of Czar Peter here, for around the little wooden shack in the middle of the museum is an walkway with an excellent resume of the history of Czar Peter in Zaandam and his experience. Furthermore, information is given how the Dutch royal family exerted themselves to preserve the "Czaar Peterhuisje". Finally you enter the wooden shack and try to imagine living here. When you have completed your round, you encounter a display which celebrates the visit in 2005 by President Putin of the Russian Federation. Indeed, many visitors from Russia are welcomed here. This attraction is to be recommended.

I had previously read of Czaar Peter's visit to the Netherlands in the 1600's to learn about ship building. While in Zaandam recently with friends they suggested we visit his house. This old wooden house is kept as a museum supported both by the Dutch and Russian governments. A replica can be found in St. Petersburg. It was a typical chilly wet day but the visit was a great reminder of some past history. In fact the royal dutch family is directly connected to Czaar Peter.
