Reasonably priced ferry service between the two ports aimed at the tourist market so you get a bar ands commentary whilst you're waiting to cast off (they switch it off so you actually get to enjoy the voyage).
The savings from the all-in packages aren't that great so if you're not certain what you want buy a basic return and you can just buy the other bits separately. If the boat is just about to leave you can board directly and buy the tickets at the bar on board - just tell the man at the gangplank and he'll find you after you've set off to pay

Well worth taking as part of visit to Edam, Volegdams & Marken ,takes you to the quant small town of Marken, then the bus back to Amsterdam. Easily done on the local bus for €10 and€7:50 for the ferry.

Even though there is a road to Marken, traveling by boat was a much nicer way to arrive. The boat ride was probably around 25 minutes, just enough time for a beer to enjoy while gazing out of the window. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate and allow us to sit outside.
The boat was clean, as is everything else in The Netherlands and the cost was very reasonable, at 9 euros PP.

It’s bizarre seeing some reviews on here from folks who say there’s nothing much to see from the ferry! Hello! This isn’t a sightseeing cruise! It’s a Ferry!!
Its primary purpose is to get passengers between Volendam and Marken. That’s it.
It’s not a tour from which to marvel at attractions along the way, as there isn’t any. The only vistas you’ll glimpse are the distant shores!
Folks should be fair in leaving reviews and not rate this ferry service on the lack of things to see along the route!
These boats are well maintained. We left the dock on schedule.
Loved that the bar onboard was open as you boarded so you’re able to get drinks and settle in for the journey. There are clean bathrooms available and lots of seating inside and out as well as on the upper deck. However, when the weather is grim upstairs is not a nice place to be.
This ferry service is vital for tourists and locals. The price isn’t that bad for a one day return and the staff are very helpful and have good attitudes.
The trip didn’t take very long and you arrive right in the center of Volendam’s lively waterfront.
Excellent as ferry services go!

From Central Station, you can get a day bus pass that will take you to Volendam, Edam and Marken. This is a day trip. Cost is $15. A great bargain and better than taking an organized tour. I started at Marken. Beautiful serene Dutch country scene and harbor. Small traditional houses. A few restaurants. From here, I paid extra to take the Marken Volendam Ferry. It was $8 and well worth it. Or you can go by bus. Volendam is totally touristy. It was crowded. I spent my time visiting the Volendam Museum. From Volendam, I took the bus to Edam. This is a beautiful country village. It is quiet. There are lots of cheese shops and they offer samples. Delicious cheeses in great variety. Beautiful village to stroll. A bus ride back to Amsterdam completed my day.

We travelled on the ferry this morning, it was very misty and damp. Arriving at Marken, I was descending the metal stairway between decks and even though I was holding on to both rails, my feet slipped off the step and I travelled down on my back - very painful. I imagine this must have happened before and wonder why there isn't rubber or something similar on the stairs.
Apart from that, I found the rest of the experience nice. Quick and easy way to get to the very picturesque village. Just thankful my return trip wasn't on a stretcher!

Quick scenic boat trip from Volendam to Marken. Much better than the bus. We sat in the sunshine on the upper deck for this 30 minute ride. Helpful and gracious staff. We were able to take ferry one way from Volendam and bus back to Amsterdam. If you have questions about your day trip itinerary they are most helpful. The boat was well maintained. Price was more than fair. Our route was bus from Centraal to Edam, but back to Volendam with a look around then ferry to Marken and bus back to Amsterdam Centraal. It was a perfect day trip from Amsterdam

We recently took the ferry between Marken and Volendam and it was quite good. The pleasant ferry ride takes about half an hour, and the scenery is quite nice. The boats have comfortable indoor and outdoor seating for those brave souls that wish to battle the cold, rainy weather and get a better view. The express runs regularly between the villages and is modestly priced.

Enjoyed the boat ride although i must confess that it was only half an hour. I took this boat to visit the factory that produces the famous wooden shoes in volendam. overall experience was quite satisfying.

Bonjour, j'aimerais savoir si notre labrador peut monter sur le bateau pour faire la traversée ?
Written July 28, 2019
Good Morning! I must be honest, I'm not 100% sure, but the ferry is also used by locals, so I presume to 98% yes. At all outdoor places people come with dogs.

Is the ferry stroller friendly?
Written September 2, 2018
I think so , there is enough room where you can put it. Trains also has a private part for strollers..

Hello
Can you please guide me about all the good places to cover in this area and from where will i get the ferry?
Written July 23, 2018
Downtown Volendam, a few blocks from the harbor has a museum that is open seasonably. Several restaurants along the water - the smoked eel is a local specialty. The ferry has a multi lingual audio tour and offers beer, wine, coffee and snacks. Marken has a cozy pub on the harbor, walk left from the dock.
We got the ticket for the all day waterlands bus upstairs at Amsterdam Centraal Station. Our first stop was Edam - no crowds here. We loved tasting cheese at the shop and visiting with the cheesemaker.

Qual o custo do barco? E das fábricas de queijo e tamancos? Precisa agendar a visita? Obrigada.
Written October 3, 2017

Does the Amsterdam & Region Travel ticket cover free transport on the Volendam Marken Express?
Written April 20, 2017
Thank you for the answers.
I have now had a response from the Marken ferry operators who state that there is a 10% reduction for the Amsterdam & Region Card. The ferry is free with the I Amsterdam City Card.
