The Cathedral Basilica of St. Bavo (New Bavo) was designed by J.Th. Cuypers...

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Bavo (New Bavo) was designed by J.Th. Cuypers and built in the period from 1895 to 1930. The Cathedral Basilica is based on the classic form of a three-aisled basilica with chapels along the aisles and chapels along the choir. Because construction took a lot of time and a period of lack of funds in the diocese building temporarily brought, Cuypers was given the opportunity to present his designs several adjustments during construction and perform. The building therefore has an eclectic style, mainly neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic elements alongside Moorish and Assyrian ornament shapes and influences of Art Nouveau and the architect H. P. Berlage. Recently artworks of Jan Dibbets, Gijs Frieling and Marc Mulders were added to the interior. Without doubt a very special building. Activities at this monument: KathedraalMuseum, Willibrord Organ plus periodically vault tours and climbing the towers.

It's a beautiful church in Haarlem and I visited it during a flower mosaic exhibition in April. We took a guided tour up to the roof top and was a beautiful view of the town. The church choir also adds to the warmth that you feel when visiting the church.

The day before my visit a huge storm felled many trees in the vicinity of this beautiful building but somehow it seemed to have escaped unscathed..... Unable to gain entry, possibly due to the ongoing restoration work, I had to be satisfied with a walk round the exterior. It is one of the best brick buildings I have visited and... More

I used to live near St. Bavo. Absolutely beautiful and amazing place! You can walk along the canal near the cathedral or relax on the bench enjoying a lovely view! Nearby there was (and I hope still is) one of the best bakeries in Haarlem. It is not exactly in the center of Haarlem but I am sure it is... More

Being weary from walking in this beautiful city, I stepped into this Cathedral of St. Bavo and was greeted by their magnificent organ playing during the noon hour. I just sat quietly and felt both peace and rejuvenation. Awed by both the organ and the beauty of the church itself.

We only toured the building from the outside, as there was major renovation construction taking-place while we were there... Nonetheless, the exterior elevations are stunning in their grandeur...

You can wander round the cathedral for free, but if you want to see the famous painting then there's a surcharge. You can see a copy of the painting for free as you wander round the cathedral, so unless you're particularly fussed about seeing the original then I wouldn't bother with the fee.

A lovely church and we appreciated the fact that they supply a floor plan pointing out the interesting things to look at.

This is the big attraction in this awesome town. The church is huge and dominates the scenery. You can't miss this one.

This enormous church sits beside a canal and boasts gargoyles, a huge dome and outstanding stained glass windows. There are also several lovely statues and a chapel with beautiful mosaic panels. I did not get a chance to hear the organ, but a Dutch friend said it's worth going to a concert if you have a chance.
