I compromised with my teenagers in Amsterdam and went to only Van Gogh and the modern museum, but when we visited Haarlem, we visited the Frans Hal. It was delightful and presented a nice variety, and the building itself is charming, with many different rooms and a center courtyard. Definitely recommended while in the quaint town of Haarlem!

Nice paintings from the Dutch Golden Age. Also some nice modern paintings. In a nice building in the old center of Haarlem.

This was a must visit spot for this trip to the Netherlands. It was an excellent choice. I've always liked Frans Hall and finally visiting here was fantastic. Wall coverings made from leather with prints were very impressive. Not to mention all the paintings, clocks, porcelain and furniture. Truly an impressive collection of Master Pieces. It's a delightful, short walk... More

Rather naively, I assumed that the whole place was devoted to Frans Hals one of the main Dutch portrait painters of the "Golden Age". Of course there is much more including many other Dutch Masters exhibited. Free audio guide. Watch opening times. Didn't open until 11am on the day I visited. A Combi Ticket allowing visits to Frans Hals and... More

Even though the entrance fee is quite expensive, kudos for the free english audio guide. Knowing more or less nothing about art, this was a very pleasant way to spend a sunday afternoon. Several amazing pieces of art, where The monk and nun became my imidiate favourite.

After spending a full day at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam we almost skipped this museum. We are greatful we did not. The quality and diversity of the art was exceptional. We enjoyed taking our time and not fighting crowds. If you are near Haarlem it is a must see (if you can find it).

Very enjoyable visit. Nice room settings to get an idea of the period as well as period art. We were in a group and had a guide who was excellent.

A medium size museum which is a 10 min walk from the Grote Market. Frans Hals works are quite interesting if you have an appetite for very similar group portraits if the Dutch militia in the 1600s .
