This station is 15 to 20 minutes from Amsterdam, depending on the time of day you travel. That makes Haarlem an easy side trip from the city.

From the station it is a short – 10 minute – walk to the city center.

This station was built in the early 1900s, I believe. There are unique architectural flourishes all over. I always enjoy seeing the wooden bike rails going down the stairs to help bikers control their bikes. (see below)

We were a bit confused about the procedure when inside and there was no staff around to answer questions, so know what you need to know before you get there.

We used this station to travel to Leiden for the day whilst staying in Haarlem (recommend this day trip!). We avoided the ticket machine and went straight to the ticket office. Lady spoke excellent English and was really helpful / friendly. Signs were very clear, station clean and tidy as were the double decker trains. Even the train guard greeted the carriage as he entered.....how refreshing !! Good overall experience.

We stayed across the station square from the Haarlem Railway Station at Hotel Lion Dor. There was no noise from the station itself but noise from neighbours.

Haarlem has two train stations however this is the main one.

The opening of the station occurred on September 20, 1839. and of greek neo-classical style.

The station is a great base to get around The Netherlands with Amsterdam less than 20 minutes away.

The station has a mini supermarket, some eateries and a bike repair shop.

At the front of the Train Station is a bus interchange as well as many eateries and bars. There is a direct airport bus (300) which runs regularly.

Haarlem Centre is only about an 8 minute easy scenic walk away.

Not sure why this station is listed on TripAdvisor as it's not really an attraction. It's a good station with a few facilities. Everything is well organised, well sign posted and easy to navigate, but not exceptional by Dutch standard. It is located very close to the tourist circuit in Haarlem and easy to and from Amsterdam Centraal.

The Haarlem Railway Station is situated around 10-15 minutes walk from the main sightseeing area around Grote Markt in Haarlem. There are numerous trains connecting to Amsterdam, making a day trip to Haarlem very convenient when staying in Amsterdam.

The original station dates back from the early 19th century. The current building was constructed between 1906-08 and features Art Nouveau features. The exterior is nice and we particularly enjoyed the platform area with its unique and interesting architecture, brick structure and wooden framed windows and facade.

Give the station a quick look-see if you enjoy architecture before rushing out of the station to spend your day of sightseeing around Harleem.

Haarlem’s railway station is a small-ish station with trains running frequently between Harlem -Schiphol Airport and Haarlem-Amsterdam.
We found it quick and cheap to catch the train to/from the airport. The trip took less than 30 minutes, with one change at Sloterdijk.
Arriving in Haarlem, it was a fairly straightforward walk into the centre of town.
It was pretty easy (even dragging our bags) to walk to our hotel near the central square. It took us about 15 minutes (but it would be quicker without suitcases).
The station itself has some historic charm, with original tiles, stained glass, decorative wrought ironwork and wooden panelling, dating back to 1908.
Unfortunately, the lifts were broken during the couple of days that we were in Haarlem. Im not sure but I suspect this might be a common problem. The ‘not working’ signs looked as if they might have been there for a little while and we also found broken lifts at the Sloterdijk interchange. There were a lot of stairs to/from the platform, making it very difficult to manage with suitcases. We weren’t the only ones and a couple of elderly people and a young mum with a pram were also struggling. For anyone with mobility issues or if you have very heavy bags, I'd recommend catching the bus instead (buses leave from right outside the station).
There are not many facilities inside the station, apart from a small mini-mart shop near the entrance that sold snacks and drinks. There's also a nearby Starbucks.
NOTES:
* The Netherlands train website ( ns.nl ) is very useful. We referred to this to plan all our train trips.
* It’s worth noting that if you are staying in Amsterdam, the train trip to Haarlem is only 15 - 20 minutes, making Haarlem an excellent day trip.
